Philo's Mexican Shuffle Band

15 February 2009 | San Sebastian, Jalisco, Mex.
Our trip to San Sebastian was organized by Philo Hayward an ex-cruiser who operates the local cruiser hangout "Philo's Bar and Music Studio" in the little village of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle. Each year, Philo takes his band up to San Sebastian along with about 100 gringos, both Canadian, US and some cruisers like us. The crews from eight boats joined him this year. In the picture the band is playing in the courtyard of the Hotel Pallomba with the "fans" all gathered around the other three sides. The white shirted man on the left is Andy Turpin "Bandjo Andy" of Latitude 38 Magazine who was in town to do the "Puddle Jump" seminar so he came along to sit in with Philo who is wearing the other white shirt. Not shown but immediately in front of the band was a star shaped of paving stones which mark the former mineshaft opening of an old silver mine. Just to the left of the picture, was a stone ramp which led up to another courtyard where we could still see the old vaults where the silver was kept after being smelted into bars for shipment back to Spain. The town lacked any signage which dated the various buildings so we could not tell how old any of them really were. All were built with the same architecture and had the same paint job of marroon red the first several feet and then whitewash walls up to the read tile roof. We under stand that the government mandates this paint skeme for colonial era towns all across Mexico.
