Taking out the old engine

01 August 2010 | Marina Nayarit at La Cruz
This whole winter, we have been having trouble with the engine, overheating and slow starting. In February, we put in a new piston and planned the head along with new gaskets all round. This worked for a while until the crankcase filled with water as we anchored at Yelapa. We finished our weeks cruise with our daughter and then returned to the marina at La Cruz. We decided it was time to re-power so we ordered a new Yanmar engine from Total Yacht Services in Mazatlan. It worked out that we could take the old engine out and install the new one here at La Cruz. We hired Butch, a local gringo mechanic to do the hard part and we assisted. Here we are taking the old engine out using a come-along hanging from the boom. It worked pretty slick. Then the work started to re-do the bunkers upon which the engine sits so that it would accept the new Yanmar.

Thousands of Birds!

01 August 2010 | Punta de Mita
We left Yelapa at noon and had a great sail across Banderas Bay and anchored in Punta de Mita. As we came into the anchorage, we were surronded by thousands (millions?) of birds flying around and sitting in the water. There were many kinds gathered here and they stayed around all day. We think they were drawn by the large number of bait fish in the water as the water all around us was rippled with fish in the surface. Of course, the birds had a field day eating their fill. We have never experienced having so many birds in one place anywhere else that we have had the boat. It was very noisey and that bothered our daughter who just wanted a nice quiet time at anchor. Most were gone the next day and we did not miss them either.

There goes the "concrete block truck"

01 August 2010 | Yelapa, Banderas Bay
From the previous post I mentioned that there are no roads into this place and everything has to come by boat. As we walked through the village, we passed a colum of mules going the other way carrying concrete blocks. Later we saw men pushing wheelbarrels of groceries from a boat up to a local store. They lead an interesting way of life but I think I like having cars and trucks as part of our culture.
