Bahamas Here We Come!
27 March 2016 | KEY LARGO/RODRIGUEZ KEY
Kris/Weather 80s sunny and nicely breezy
We had a great sail today. Leaving Channel Five near Long Key we picked up an east-southeast wind which blew steadily all day. I am guessing it was 15-20 knots because the forecast was 10-15, and I swear they estimate low, just to keep us sailors on our toes. Our wind meter decided not to function today, but we sailed motor off for several hours.
We enjoyed dodging hundreds of crab pot bobbers and observed a fresh hatch of Man-o-war Jellyfish. There were thousands of them dotting our route. I tried to take a picture, but they were not that photogenic, a little blob of dark on a sea of turquoise blue. A few sea turtles ducked out of our way as we passed.
Our anchorage tonight is behind Rodriquez Key off the shores of Key Largo. We are making or final preparations for a crossing to Gun Cay Bahamas. Jack tended to anchor lines, hoisted the stars and stripes and I packed our ditch bag just in case. We will depart at first light and may not be in internet contact until we see some WI-Fi at a Marina or bar somewhere in the Bahamas.
By the way, the autopilot functioned flawlessly never veering from it's course except when we put it on standby to avoid crab pots. No fuses were blown. I believe Jack outsmarted the expert advice and made it functional for Gulf Stream transit and Bahamas cruising.
Look for a pop-up again when we can.
