Fiji Medical Emergency Experience
Dietmar Petutschnig
06/26/2011, Fiji, Lautoka

So I had a little accident on Saturday ...

While anchored off Treasure Island I was running a sheet to hang up some sheets that needed drying and whacked my head against the hard-top - slicing a nice gash across my scalp [ about 5"] - 12.15 PM

Kurt was diving off the boat and blood was gushing about - manged to compress it myself with several T-Shirts till Kurt came back up to the surface and saw me standing there with blood soaked rags over my head - around 1.30 PM

went to the medical station on Treasure Island where the nurse recommended we head back to Lautoka to the main
regional hospital - so with more compression bandages on my head a little less blood - both engines at full speed we motored to Vuda Point Marina - about 7 miles away.

An ambulance was waiting at the dock for me and made it to the Emergency Room at 4.20 PM sharp.

A nurse checked me in - First Name Last Name DOB and where I was from - straight to X rays then back to the nurse who cleaned me up for the surgeon - who with the help of 2 other nurses and an intern stitched me up - gave me a booster tetanus shot - and sent me on my way to the pharmacy for antibiotics and painkillers -

Total cost including Ambulance 4 X-Rays stitches bandages sutures booster shot prescription drugs doctors nurses and a Taxi back to the Marina

257 FJD or about 147 USD !

Getting a picture of 3 Fijian Nurses smiling and taking good care of me - Priceless !

Thanks Kurt ! for NOT taking a picture with the bloody rags on my head and being so cool and calm -
and Vienna for licking the dripping blood off my legs

How horrific! 4-1/2 hours to the emergency room. How good of you not to be too shocky or lose consciousness. Moving on, you must be loving Fiji! We're in British Columbia in 55F, but loving the islands, trees, boulders, and marine life: whales, sea otters, harbor porpoises and seals. Crabs and shrimp aren't bad either!

Nello Dietmar! Loved Musket Cove scuba diving: Sue and I each dove 7 times. So much to see. Currently in Campbell River, BC, Canada. Circumnavigating Vancouver Island.
Cheers!

We have arrived at last ! Back in the tropics with crystal clear waters - this is the view from the top of Manoriki Island [Tom Hank's eternalized this island with the movie Cast Away]

A great spot and one we'll be sure to visit again.
