New Winches

14 February 2009 | Sacramento
Cold, raining and windy
Well my friend Bill who has the 36' ericson discovered tow of his Barient winches were worn out (the drums rock on their bases) so he ordered two new Anderson winches to replace them. Being the conscientious friend that I am told him that I would stand between him and the trash can for his old winches. Long story short or shorter I am now the proud owner of a pair of Barient Model 19 self tailing winches (that wobble, a little) I am in contact with Arco winches in Australia who now owns all of the old barient tooling and designs and is making replacement parts. Hopefully I can get new drums if they are available and the price is not prohibitive or possibly I will find a machine shop here locally that can sleeve the drums with a new bearing surface for cheap? Until then I will probably mount them in place of my lewmar #6 winches and use them for jib sheet winches, self tailing will make tacking and jibing so much easier, even if the winch does wobble a little.

Also My loving admiral felt sorry for me that I broke my Magellan triton 300 GPS (who knew that you couldn't kneel on the screen?) and bought me a new Triton 400 for Valentines day. This came with case and National Geographics Topo maps, and a SD card slot for tons o' map space. I love my wife she so get's me.
