Blue Grey Tanager in San Lorenzo
05 May 2011 | Near Marina
Marilyn
Today I walked with Stella from Germany. I was unusually quiet -- no howler noises. We saw these beautiful blue grey tanagers.
Trogan in San Lorenzo
04 May 2011 | San Lorenzo Forest
Today we ralked in the San Lorenzo Forest. Ishmael, Milagro and Limerick went on the walk. We saw a truly amazing Black Tailed Trogan. It has a black tail, red belly, green head and an orange beak. So colorful and it sat for us to shoot pictures like it was a portrait session.
Toucans in San Lorenzo
03 May 2011 | San Lorenzo Forest
Marilyn
We went home for a couple of weeks on April 7th. and returned April 20th. Marilyn has been walking with Limerick and s\has seen many wonderful birds. The beautiful one today was 8 toucans in one tree at the same time. Truly AMAZING!!!
3 toed Sloth
30 March 2011 | San Lorenzo Walk
Marilyn
Sue from Limerick led a morning walk today. Eight of us went up to San Lorenzo Park entrance and then again to Playa Diablo. On the beach we picked up some trash and brought it to the park ranger to dispose of.
On the way we saw howler monkeys, orioles and a 3 toed sloth. The sloth loves eating the white flowers on the bare -- flowering -- tree and he lumbers along to find them. Along the way he itches his toes.
2nd Canal Crossing Gatun Lake
29 March 2011 | Gatun Lake
Marilyn
On Gatun Lake there is much construction for the widening of the Canal. Where we anchored near Gatun Locks, in addition to howler monkeys in the trees (after all the animals had been removed to a wildlife preserve), we saw the construction for the new entrance tor the wider locks. We also saw much dredging -- especially in the Guillard / Culebra Cut -- where Centennial bridge is now.
Again we went through the second part of the locks with tourist boats from Gatun Lake -- including the Discovery -- which was also in Shelter Bay Marina with us.
The picture is of the dredging. They are taking the dredged material and pouring it on trucks and removing it. I could only see traces of the beautiful waterfall I saw here in the 1980s when I came through the Canal on the Island Princess. Our adviser for the second day, Carlos, does dredging as his promary job and we passed the site where his group is now dredging.
