Arrived in American Samoa
21 August 2015 | Pago Pago, American Samoa
Marilyn. Windy, still, showers, humid finally warm - even hot
We achieved a long term goal today by arriving in AmericanSamoa. We missed coming here on our crossing in 2012. Postage and shopping is good for Americans here.
We sailed again NE from Tonga. About 300 nMiles. We had good wind to the end" we slowed down to arrive in the daylight. The wind changed at the last minute and we had to motor against the wind to enter.
We checked in and anchored in the harbor. It is notorious for poor holding and we slipped the anchor. Overnight we tried to pull in the anchor and could not. We got a diver in the morning and found a large chain on it. We are now on a large bollard in the harbor. This is ok unless there is no wind.
This is a volcanic island. The mountains around the harbor are tall. One is Rainmaker Mountain and it is shrouded with rainouts much of the time. With the rain you might think the water situation would be better.
