Abaco - Great Exuma

Le dernier jour de la visite de Tom ils sont allés tous les deux à la chasse à la langouste . Et bingo! Ils ont pris la première langouste de la saison. Tom était aux anges! Après avoir laissé Tom à Marsh Harbour dimanche le 28 décembre nous restons à Marsh Harbour pour faire notre lessive, réapprovisionner en produits frais. Mardi la météo prévoit que le vent sera d'est mais pour peu de temps. Alors nous levons l'ancre et on va s'ancrer Lynyard Island au sud de l'ile de Great Abaco. Nous serons positionner pour pouvoir faire voile vers le Sud. Le long de l'ile il y a plusieurs bateaux qui le lendemain l'aube appareille tous pour le Sud. On est une procession d'une dizaine de voiliers. Après 2 heures avec un vent de 10-15 nœuds, le vent tombe et on est tous alors à voile et moteur. C'est la veille du jour de l'an et tous les voiliers convergent vers Eleuthera. Nous avons décidé de descendre le plus possible vers le sud direction les Exumas. Le vent d'Est devrait virer au Sud Est dans 24 heures et donc empêcher tout mouvement vers le sud pour les prochains jours. On fait donc voile vers Fleming Channel entre Eleuthera et les Exumas. On rentre dans le Channel au coucher du soleil. A minuit on approche de Beacon Cay et on ne fait pas attention au passage de la Nouvelle année car on surveille les récifs autour. Il devait y avoir un feu de navigation dans le coin, mais il a disparu. Mais on voit très bien car la lune éclaire comme en plein jour.

Le vent forcit et toutes voiles dehors on glisse le long des Exumas. On roule entre 6 et 7.5 nœuds pour arriver au petit matin en vue de Rat Cay l'entrée des Exumas Banks. Juste quand on arrive les 3 lignes que SYL a mis à la traine partent en même temps. Branle bas de combat. On ramène les lignes le plus vite possible. SYL a pris un beau King Maquerel (gros maquereau). Je ramène la ligne pour que SYL harponne le poisson. C'est une petite dorade (mahi mahi). Quand à ce qu'il y avait au bout de la dernière ligne mystère: le poisson a coupé le filin... On aura du poisson frais pour fêter le jour de l'an lorsqu'on sera à l'ancre et reposé! On approche de la passe. Le vent a molli. On mettra l'ancre en face de William Cay. On ne devrait pas bouger pour les 3 prochains jour. Les vent du SE doivent souffler entre 20 – 25 nœuds, rafales à 30. Donc on en profitera pour nager et aller se promener sur l'ile qui a de bons sentiers. L'ancrage est protégé et il n'y a quasi personne. Les plaisanciers ne sont pas encore arrivés et la saison touristique commence normalement à la mi janvier. L'eau est à 26C. Après notre nuit blanche on va se coucher tôt.

Ce matin on est aller visité des rochers où SYL avait harponné plusieurs langoustes l'an dernier. Ouallou! Nada! Rien! Mais les poissons sont toujours aussi jolis!

Ce soir on fêtera le début de l'année au champagne.

Abaco - Exumas

The last day of Tom's visit they went together to lobster hunting. And bingo, they caught the first lobster of the season. Tom was so happy! We left him in Marsh Harbour on December 28. We took advantage of being in town to do our laundry and replenish with fresh produce. On Tuesday the weather forecast opened a small window for going South with East winds. We left Marsh Harbour and anchored along Lynyard Island to be able to get to the closest cut the next morning bound for the Exumas. There are several boats anchored there and most of them will lift anchor with us at dawn. The East wind is at 10-12 knots at the beginning but soon we are all motoring in very light wind. All of them are going to spend New Years Eve at Eleuthera (Royal Island). We have decided to continue South during the night toward the Exumas. The wind is supposed to shift to SE by the end of next day and should stay that way for several days and then go south-east (Not good!!). We went on the Exhuma bank towards Flemming Channel and then exited at the Ship Channel during the night. At first we were somewhat concerned, but once on site, the channel was very wide and the maps adequate to navigate through the cuts. Once on the Exhuma Sound, the winds picked-up and we were able to sail nicely... 12-16 knots wind on the beam with SOG (Speed Over Ground) of 6.5 – 7.5 knots. Our new main sail is working nicely.
Three fishing lines were set as we crossed the sound but we had a bite only once 2 hours from our destination. Triple bite, all three lines unwinding like crazy... We slowed down the boat, I was able to retreive a good size King Mackerel and a Cecile small Mahi... The third fish took off with the bait line etc! Maybe we should have reeled that line first!!! Now we have fresh fish to celebrate New Year 2015 once anchored and rested, the rest will go in the freezer...
We came in the Barraterre Area through Rat Cay Cut and anchored in pristine emerald waters off William Cay. We will not move much from here for a few days, they are calling for 20-35 knots winds over the weekend. We are safely anchored and only one boat by us. The water is at 26C. We will take advantage of the area and swim, walk the beaches on the Atlantic side of the island.
Today, Jan. 2nd, we went looking for lobster on a known spot... To no avail, the bottom was very sandy and apart from seeing the usual nice fish, we came back empty handed! Well, next time!
We are now well rested and tonight, we will celebrate our own New Years 2015... Champagne please!
