Georgetown – En attendant que la météo coopère

Nous sommes arrivés à Georgetown Great Exuma le 5 janvier après avoir passé plusieurs jours près de Barraterre qui se trouve au Nord de Great Exuma- Georgetown est à l'extrémité Sud. On est sorti un peu en mer pour essayer de pêcher mais pas de bol.

Depuis notre arrivée dans les Exumas, les vents se sont établis à l'Est et Sud Est donc pas de chance pour migrer vers le Sud ou les Caraibes. C'est très inusité pour la période.Il y a près de 200 bateaux dans la rade de Elizabeth Harbour, le port de Georgetown. Plus qu'il y a un an à la même période et une bonne portion est en attente pour un passage vers les Antilles ou vers Cuba.

Pour notre part nous devons retourner à Houston et nous prenons l'avion le 29 janvier. J'ai prévu un retour le 27 février. On laisse le bateau sur un mooring dans un Hurricane Hole et on reprendra notre croisière début mars.

Les derniers jours les vents se sont établis autour de 25 nœuds avec rafales à 30 avec des giboulées. Donc on ne va pas bien loin en dinghy : marche sur l'ile en face et natation sur la plage pas loin. On profite pour faire les corvées et on répare les petites avaries qu'on ne fait pas quand il fait beau.

On a acheté un nouveau moteur hors bord Yamaha 15 HP, 2 cycle et vendu le Mercurey 9.9 HP en 4 heures après l'avoir annoncé sur les ondes VHF. Un couple de Sud Africains qui voulaient un plus gros moteur. On a pu le vendre à bon prix car beaucoup de bateaux se rendent compte qu'ils ont besoin de plus gros moteurs surtout quand les vents sont au dessus de 15 nœuds. Donc pas un mauvais deal! Un copain a moi m'a recommandé de commencer un business de vente de moteurs hors-bord usagés!!! Le nouveau moteur est plus puissant et plus robuste pour l'environnement ici.

SYL n'a pris jusqu'à présent qu'un homard dans les Abacos avec Tom. Il semble qu'avec le mauvais temps les pêcheurs ont nettoyé les endroits les plus accessibles.

Georgetown...

We arrived in Georgetown Exhuma on Jan. 5th after spending a few days in Barraterre, located 28 nmiles north of here. Georgetown is almost at the south tip of Great Exhuma Island. We had good luck fishing around Barraterre last year, but there must have been too many people passing by early in the season... Not a lobster in sight... Oh well, later...

Since our arrival here, the winds have been blowing from the East-South-East making it difficult to go south or the Carribean. Unsual for this time of the year; there is 200 boats in the Georgetown area, a lot of them waiting for the right weather to keep going south, East Indies or Cuba.

For us, we must return to Houston for roughly a month to complete our US immigration process. We have an interview on Feb. 2nd and pending this interview we should know better what our retuns schedule here will be... We are hoping we can have an early oath ceremony and be able to get our new passports quickly. We booked flights leaving here on the 29th of January with a return on the 27th of February; easy to change if we need to. We will leave Pura Vida on a safe mooring here. Fly to Miami, rent a car to go to Fort Pierce to pick-up the Jeep out of its storage facility and drive to Houston.

Last few days, the winds around here are from the SE at 25 knots with gusts up to 32 knots pushing wipping rain on the boats across the harbour... Good to get the boats de-salted! I love it, no need for me to wash the decks, bimini etc.
We dinghy ashore to go walking and to a small beach close-by where we look the painter of the dinghy around our shoulder and swim the dinghy back dragging it... a mile mile ride swimming that contributes greatly to keeping us fit!
We finally bought a new outboard here in Georgetown, a 15 HP, 2 cycle Yamaha and sold the Mercurey 9.9HP in 4 hours to a couple of South Africans. Not a bad deal at all! A friend of mine hearing about this suggested I start a new business selling used outboards!!!
The new motor is not only more powerful but also more rugged for the conditions here. Pricing is also much less than in the rest of the Carribean. An outboard here is deemed an essential product.
