Une bouteille à la mer

Nous avons été faire un petit tour dans les Jumentos. Partis la semaine dernière avec un vent favorable nous nous sommes promenés de Buena Vista Cay à Double Breasted Cay à Hog Cay, Ragged Island....
Nous sommes partis à trois bateaux Sam the Skull et Amazing Grace. Une fois rendu à Double Breasted nous avons retrouvé d'autres voiliers canadiens rencontrés l'an dernier. Nous avons donc arpenté les plages désertes à la recherche de graines d'arbre tropicaux rejetés par à la mer et de verre dépoli par le sable. J'ai peu nagé car plusieurs encrages sont fréquentés par les requins. SYL était aux anges car il a enfin pu prendre plusieurs langoustes. Nous avons aussi rencontré plusieurs bateaux avec des enfants à bord, ce qui était rarissime les années précédentes. Le nombre de bateaux a augmenté aussi dans cette région. Les Jumentos qui étaient très isolées et peu fréquentées deviennent de plus en plus courus. A Hog Cay on a rencontré d'ailleurs un couple d'allemand sud africain qui étaient les premiers à découvrir les Jumentos en 1999. Il n'y avait à l'époque aucune carte marine et il n'y avait que 2 voiliers dans toutes ces iles.

Nous avons également rencontré l'invité de Sam The Skull, Ross. Cette histoire est assez extraordinaire pour que je la raconte. L'hiver dernier (2013), Barbara et Kerry sa fille de Sam The Skull se promenaient sur l'une des plages de Buena Vista Cay, cherchant des ''trésors'' parmi les débris rejetés par la mer. Elles ont alors découvert une bouteille avec un message à l'intérieur. La bouteille avait été jeté au large des iles du Cap Vert par Ross, un artiste qui convoyait un voilier en 2010. Il avait mis ses coordonnées. Mais là ou cela devient extraordinaire est que Ross est écossais et vit dans une petite ile de l'ouest de l'Ecosse et Barbara et John de Sam The Skull sont également de ces iles et vivent à quelques km de là! Ils connaissaient le village de Ross. La coïncidence est stupéfiante!!!!

Ross a mis à la mer plusieurs centaines de bouteilles soit en traversant l'océan soit en les jetant au large d'Écosse et son projet est d'aller là ou la bouteille a été découverte pour peindre et filmer les gens et le coin afin de produire un documentaire. Ses bouteilles ont été retrouvées en Bretagne, à Cuba, Mexique, Texas (Padre Island), Antilles, Miami.... Sa prochaine escale était d'aller à Cuba comme équipier sur un voilier mais finalement comme beaucoup de plaisanciers n'étaient pas sûrs si ils pouvaient laisser un équipier dans ce pays on l'a ramené à Georgetown pour qu'il prenne l'avion pour la Havane de Nassau. Par contre tous les vols étaient pleins car les Bahamiens vont se faire soigner à Cuba. J'espère qu'il pourra aller voir les 2 personnes qui ont trouvé ses bouteilles sur cette ile. Ross nous a laissé un petit video avec en vedette SYL. Je vais essayer de le télécharger sinon cela ira quand nous seront à Houston.

Nous sommes à Georgetown pour 3 jours avant de prendre l'avion pour Houston. Purs Vida restera sur un mooring. On devrait revenir fin février

A Message in a bottle

After a dozen of days in the Jumentos we are back in Georgetown ahead of some bad weather and in waiting for our flight to go back to Houston.

We left Georgetown with two other boats : Sam The Skulll and Amazing Grace and went down the chain of the Jumentos : Buena Vista Cay, Double Breated Cay, Hog Cay, Ragged Island. SYL was very happy with the lobster hunting. The reefs are pretty so the snorkeling is very nice. Some anchorages you can swim without worries. Others you have to watch for sharks. They are suppose to be inoffensive but I will not ask them! I had forgotten the rule where when you anchor you go to check your anchor with a bucket with a clear bottom. In Double Breasted I dive to check it and soon enough 2 sharks came to see what was in the water!

There are more boats now in Georgetown (around 260 todayin Georgetown and in the Jumentos. We ended it up with a dozen boats in one anchorage. This is a lot for this area. Charts are better and more people are cruising this area. Also more and more catamarans which can go in these shallow waters. We met with a German couple from South Africa who were the only boat with another one in the Jumentos in 1999. There were then no marine charts and they only had topographical land maps.

After several days of walking the deserted beaches and swimming and for SYL hunting the lobsters, we came back to Georgetown ahead of some bad weather. We brought back with us Ross the guest from Sam The Skull. This story is extraordinary enough to be told. Last winter (2013-2014) Barbara and her daughter Kerry were walking the beaches of Buena Vista Cay in the Jumentos looking for "treasures", sea beans and sea glass, when they spotted a bottle with a message inside. It had the coordonates of Ross. The bottle was thrown overboard offshore the Cape Verde Islands by Ross in 2010. He has been doing it for years offshore Scotland or across the Atlantic. He was then conveying a boat across the Atlantic. But what is extraordinary is that Ross lives in Scotland in the Western islands where John & Barbara from Sam The Skull are also from. In fact their villages are few miles away. Ross is an artist and he tries to go where the bottles are found to paint the area and also do a documentary. After the Bahamas he was trying to go to Cuba. He tried to go as a crew on the sailing boats leaving the Jumentos but most pleasure boats did not know if they could leave a passenger in Cuba. So he came back with us to Georgetown to fly to Nassau. Flights for Cuba were all booked for Cuba: the Bahamians go to Cuba for medical reasons. So we hope he will be able to reach Cuba and meet the 2 people who collected 2 bottles, one 3 or 4 years ago and one 10 years ago.
