By nightfall, several hundred boats have anchored off the beach to watch the fireworks.

We all travelled by van to Crescent Beach for the Shelter fireworks display. We stake out a spot on the beach. The fireworks barge is anchored just about 200 yds. off the beach.

Thousands gather to watch, and all of the beach streets are blocked off.

The July 4th display was moved to today because of bad weather.

Our Faithful YANMAR Diesel

When the sun and wind fails us, we rely on our diesel for help in propulsion and power generation. Our Yanmar is a 50 hp, 4 cylinder engine that can push Ceili at hull speed, over 7.5 kts.

The engine is equipped with a high output alternator that can generate 100 amps. when the engine is running. We estimate that this provides about 1/2 our energy needs, but would like this number to be less as we augment the boat with other power sources.

We have tracked fuel consumption for 5 years, and this engine is quite miserly on fuel, averaging only .66 gal/hr running at cruise speed.

We have a 90 gallon diesel tank, giving us a range under power of over 600 miles. We have found that we fill up only about once a year!! This is a very good thing...we put in 40 gallons yesterday at the Coceles fuel dock, and it cost more than $200--ouch!!
