07/14/2008, Block Island Sound 8AM
The wind is from the west, and we are on a 90 degree easterly course for Block. The wind is light and we motorsail.
There are substantial seas in swells of 4-6 feet, rolling in every 10 seconds or so.This appears to be the distant effects of Hurricane Bertha. We are rolling quite a bit, and even the autopilot has trouble maintaining the correct course heading. After awhile, the autopilot is shut off and we steer by hand.

We're up early, heading out for Block Island. Our early departure will help us avoid a front that is approaching. Those who arrive earlier in Block have a better chance at getting a mooring.
Here we pass by the local fishing fleet.

Montauk is just a brief overnight stop-over before pushing on to Block Island tomorrow.
We plan on an early departure, for the next leg which is about 20 miles. Forecast is for a cold front to approach overnight, bringing with it rain and possible thunderstorms in the afternoon. There are small craft advisories for a portion of the area tomorrow due to high seas, probably the effect of Hurricane Bertha.
