Soldier Key...

While the Soldier Key doesn't have much to offer for exploration or beaches, the Anchorage is superb. The waters are excellent for exploration. I was able to observe an eel, a sting ray, schools of barracuda, and many reef fish swimming around a sunken vessel just off shore in the image above. Just before the American Civil War, Soldier Key was used as a basecamp for the men building Fowey Rocks light. The light four miles off shore can barely be made out on the horizon just right of our sail bag. Looking off our stern was a fantastic view of the Miami Skyline. While this anchorage may look exposed, we are surrounded by shallow reefs and shoals. In the morning we will pick our way across the reefs to Hawk Channel on our approach to Miami.
