Arrival...AICW Mile 0

19 August 2013
We arrived at our mid summer destination on schedule...late July. Here for about a month while some maintenance and upgrades are completed at Washburn's Boat Yard. Our trip continues in really great weather with few surprises...been through this route before.
Michelle and I went to Boston and Cape Cod for doctor visits...all good.
Will be restarting our journey to newer waters late August with a late September leg up the Potomac River to Washington DC for a few days.
We have seen lots of commercial traffic this year. The video attached was taken about 7:30am on the Cape Fear River, NC headed north to Wilmington, NC. We obviously moved over to the "breakdown lane" for his safe passage !

Familiar Destinations on our way North

29 June 2013 | Southport, NC
Sunrise as we leave Brunswick, GA

It is about time for an update as we travel north through familiar waters. Currently in Southport, NC where the Cape Fear River and the ICW meet.
Our last update was from Brunswick GA where we saw some friends, enjoyed some good Low Country culture. As we moved north from there we stopped in Savannah, Beaufort (one of Michelle's favorites), Beaufort to John's Island just south of Charleston. A new place for us... stayed at John's Island Yacht Harbor... a bit isloated but an easy cab ride to Charleston. Facility is very nice. Used the courtesy car to visit Kiawah and Seabrook Islands... Beautiful.
While at John's Island, had some electrical power supply issues in the 12v system on board diagnosed, fix designed and installed. Completely successful and I need to mention a local island marine electrical contractor, Sea Tec Marine ... Sarkis K. (owner) and his lead technician Arthur. Highly recommend if you need this sort of skill in the
area.
For the next few days we get to some skinny water as we head to Georgetown,SC. Beautiful Low Country but requires special planning with a boat that draws 5' 6" as CHANGER does. Trick for us was to leave Charleston very early (before sunrise) and ride the incoming tide most of the day. It worked and we arrived on schedule. We again had the pleasure of meeting friends who live on Pawley's Island nearby...Debbie and Tony Lucas. Had a wonderful lunch at 217 Bistro, excellent.. and enjoyed touring some very old plantations that were just stunning. Mansfield Plantation being one to get a peak at while in the area.
Continued north through one of the nicest parts of the entire ICW... the Wacamaw River... arriving in summer vacation land, Myrtle Beach. Stunning number of Jet Skies to avoid !!! Was on the horn quite often... Cough up $65 and they give you the keys... don't need to know anything. Happy to pass that spot.
Will stay in Southport for a few days to let some weather pass and then further north. Expect to spend the 4th of July at River Dunes on the Neuse River and then arrive in Norfolk around the 10th. From that point on entries will become more frequent as we venture into mostly new ports... lots to see. We have made reservations for early October to spend a week in DC after a two day trip up the Potomac... My oh my.....time is flying.

Headed North

02 June 2013 | Brunswick, GA
What is this picture? This is the sun reflection on the ceiling of our stateroom on CHANGER at sunrise while in Harbor Isle. This greeted us each morning for over a week... do you see the indian chief ?
Departed Hutchinson Island, FL May 28 north on AICW. 5 days and 4 nights and we arrived Brunswick Saturday. Had great weather, but was a bit breezy out of the east the entire time... glad we were on the inside passage. 4 nights: Cocoa, Daytona Beach, St. Augustine and Fernandina Beach.
Some weather coming in for the week. We will hold up here until we get a good weather window to pass outside to Savannah.
