Bimini Sands and the Wreck

18 April 2015 | Bimini - South End
Helen
Hauled anchor as the swell were pretty big. Decided to check out some of the other anchorages around the North and South islands of Bimini. It was about 5 or 6 miles around to the south side. Mark suggested we anchor off the freight wreck, the Sapona, which we did. There were some boats there, and we dropped a hook and waited to get in closer, by having lunch. However, just as the other boats left, about 4 or 5 other boats arrived and all wanted to anchor in front of us...also trying to raft together, although a couple of the boats could not get their anchors to bite. Then Mark and Robert were going to snorkel the wreck, but the boats in front of us would not get settled or stop their engines, and we didn't want to be near them. Some of the boats started up some Miami music and the bikini babes were dancing away, so all in all, some great entertainment. They finally left and the four of us got our snorkels and headed out. It was tough swimming against the current and the big swells. Chris returned to the boat. Mark, Robert and I swam up to the wreck and in thru what was left of the hull. Then we swam around the ship. I have never seen so many fish and big ones too! Even the coral was spectacular. Got back to the boat and Mark suggested taking Charabia on the far side of the wreck, to allow Chris to float with the swells back to the boat. So, Robert, Chris and I snorkelled and then drifted over to where Mark took Charabia. Then we left the site of the wreck and headed to find an anchorage but the winds changed direction. So, the places we selected on the way down were not going to be suitable. We tried anchoring behind a small rocky island, but the anchor would not hold. We were heading around the island and decided to try the Bimini Sands Resort and Marina. We went in and they assigned us a slip. We may stay a few days. They have two pools, the larger one overlooking the inlet with an infinity pool, the other with bar service. We got into our slip and headed to the infinity pool. It was exceptional and brand new. We had SG&T's there along with some snacks. Then we headed to the showers. We found they had a restaurant named Healing Hole Bar, so that was dinner tonight. Tomorrow, are going Big Game Hunting for a 4 hour tour as this is the fishing capital!! What a great way to celebrate Chris' birthday.

About:
We are both computer folks that were live aboard cruisers back in the 90s. We settled in Jacksonville Florida after escaping the great white north and cruising the Bahamas, T&C, DR and points south down to Trinidad. [...]
Extra: Charabia is a French slang word for nonsense or gibberish. It derives from Arabic "sharab" which means alcohol. When you drink (too much) alcohol, you start talking Charabia. The original owners named her and Mark liked the name so it stuck.
