Sauna then cool down at Monkey Beach
09 October 2014 | Pulau Penang
tropically hot
Intention was to move onto Rebak today, however needed to look at the leaking exhaust pipe first.
Very hot day especially down in the engine room with the sun beating in despite tying a sarong over the open hatch. It was like a sauna down there, good for the skin I guess! Chris had to crawl over the engine and wedge himself in the corner and as usual I was the gofer. Sea water was coming in, it took a few moments to realise that the exhaust intake was leaking. Before leaving Puteri Chris noticed that the hose clamp looked quite rusty so thought he'd better do some preventative maintenance. I said if it was working ok surely better to leave it alone. Chris felt that the clamp may have broken whilst motoring at night then we would really have an issue. The clamp was slightly different than the previous one and the rubber pipe seemed to have moulded over time to suit the clamp. Looks like we need some new rubber hose which we don't have on board. Up I go in search of a tube of stag gasket goo, found something similar that Chris used and assisted pressing the clamp and hose down on to the clamp while he tightened it. Looked like it might do, now need to wait for it to dry.
Definitely time for a swim to re hydrate our bodies. We set off in the dinghy for Monkey Beach, lovely bay with 3 or 4 bark hut cafes. Lovely clear warm water, very salty so one is very buoyant. Stunning day and clear blue sky, actually Pulau Penang is the first place we've had clear blue sky, heavily polluted haze every day from Puteri - Johor Bahrua all the way up the coast to Penang.
There was a very funny goose at Monkey Beach, it swims in the sea water, head constantly goes under water and it was furiously honking at a localboy in the water cleaning a boat. it went right up close to the boy honk honking, the boy just pushed its head under the water a few times and it finally went back to shore and waddled up the beach walking through the group,of monkeys neither phased.
Very polite and gentle monkeys, I fed them the fresh flesh from the coconut that I had just finished drinking. The I brought a packet of peanuts to feed them. I could have stayed all day watching their antics and feeding them. They pinched the flowers off thongs that one tourist let on the beach whilst swimming.
It was early evening when we were ready to depart and decided to go back to the same restuarant for dinner, this time tying the dinghy to the wharf! We enjoyed another delicious meal and icy cold beers - great finish to the day.
