We left Gili Air Island at about 3.00am, it was my intention to leave any time after 3.30am but Dianne woke up, looked at the time on her phone, it was 3.00am so she got us into action forgetting her phone time was an hour fast! Anyway all for the better we headed off away from Lombok and across the Strait where the wind picked up to 20 knots and we were cruising at 8 - 9 knots just with the headsail which is very comfortable. Getting towards 7.30am we did the radio sched and reported our great conditions, we are about 5 days ahead of the majority of the fleet at present, and then within the hour the wind had dropped!

As we approached Bali Island there were hundreds, possibly thousands of sailing outriggers, known as spider boats, they leave the beach just before dawn to go fishing then return mid morning. It is a beautiful picture with the coloured sails dotting the waters, some way out and Bali's mountain rising out of the sea as a backdrop. We sail through clusters of these boats returning to shore and have to weave our way through them. The ones we get close to seem very happy and friendly, with huge pearly smiles. I cannot believe how many of these craft there are as we sail around the coast, beach after beach after beach is crowded with these craft. It was quite an obstacle course dodging these boats and the numerous anchored rafts known as FADS(fish attracting devices), pleased we were doing this in daylight.

Finally dropped our anchor at Lovina Beach around 3.00pm and went ashore to be accosted by many hawkers selling their wares. Tourism has taken such a down turn in these once popular holiday spots since the bombing it is quite depressing. The people are so desperate to sell you something, anything they are in your face all the time, this area is the worst so far that we have been at, it is not comfortable to see people so desperate to turn a $. Beautiful quite night in the anchorage here.

Up in the morning it is Saturday now, we have a couple of guys giving the bottom of the boat a scrub and the fuel man has gone with our jerries to fill them up - more Solar! We have been using more than I like but the conditions here are very flukey for sailing with some great sailing and some calm weather. Comes with approaching the equator I suppose. However winds here at this time of year are supposed to be South Easterlies!!! Time after time the wind comes first from one direction then from the other then calm then blowy each day!

But Bali is Bali, aimed at tourists, not really our scene but still a lovely place with cheap and cheaper holidays here at present. Some aussies and europeans around and some tourists are staying for a month and longer, I guess at only $'s per night it is cheap enough.

Girls doing a bit of shopping this morning, we were going to go but it is dead flat this morning, we will be moving on as soon as we have a breeze and it will be passagemaking from then until we get close to Singapore.

Interesting technical point for anyone using Navitronics Charts - they are not accurate in this area, again we have an offset of 2000 feet. The Navitronics Chart has us parked well up on the beach, in fact in the middle of a hotel - this is quite disconcerting when you are used to GPS/Plotter positions being spot on but is a warning as to the accuracy of electronic aids to navigation! We have reported this to Navitronics who advise it "may take some time to correct".

Interesting omments about the hawkers in Bali. They have always been particularly pushy there; although no doubt exacerbated by the change in circumstances since 188 folk killed by terrorist bombs. Many Aussies speak of bali in favourable terms, and clearly it is a beautiful place with predominantly very friendly & happy people; but Dept of Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT), does not rate the security of Australians in this Country very highly. I find your info about the electronic chart system very disconcerting but good to know, as have seen first hand medium sized powered vessels navgating exclusively with these systems. Thanks & Regards.

Sometimes along the way we have had, usually young guys, come over on their fishing dorries and ask for a drink, today we passed through 100's or maybe 1,000's of the beautiful little sailing fishing boats, a simple hull with two outriggers and a Balinese style sail. They really zip along and present a beautiful picture on the water with their colourful sail. One tail ender coming back passed by the stern and indicated he would like a drink so we flagged him over and he came along side and we threw him a cold coke. Instead of just disappearing off into the distance he came back around and offered us one of his fresh fish in return! Some simple acts do restore your faith in human nature................

Gili Air and its related two other islands were just half hour drift from Lombok, we actually came through the narrow reef bounded channel here on the way to Teluk Nara two days ago.

We came across this morning. A bit of Green Island, a bit of Low Isles - a reef and snorkelling and diving, and a small village of locals - Heh what a place to live!

It is a place for relaxation - has number of accommodation places (just like Fiji in style) on the beach maybe $15-$50 a night. Many little great local eating places.

Deliver clothes and pencils etc to local school.

Relax, relax, relax for tomorrow we head for Lovina on Bali Island and then start a very solid slog of 1,000 nautical miles to Singapore as Kirsty's visa only last till about 21st!

Lombok and Gili Air

Arriving in Lombok of course we hit the beach and decided to go for a walk. Many cars pulled up to see where we were going and we eventually succumbed and took one to Sengigi Beach which we though was 5k but turned out to be about half hour drive! Did the internet, added the PHOTOS now there under Photo Gallery -Indonesia. We went to a Sengigi restaurant for dinner which was great but the whole tourist strip was very quiet I think we may have been the only customers and at ab out $18 for the three of us including a beer it must be hard going. Travelling there were numerous resorts and properties for sale and some with the "bancrupqt" sign as well - since the Bali bombings this area has suffered terribly - it has been a tragedy for the Australians involved and also the local population!

Caught a taxi back, were a bit concerned about how much it might cost but it was all of $6 and eventually found the path back to the beach where our dinghy was!

We had met a Texas couple moored nearby on the beach on our arrival and they were negotiating with Mohamed who runs the moorings etc (He is 25, runs the moorings, arranges tours, arranges for Solar and water, and in his spare time sells fine pearls from the nearby pearl farm and goes to the local Lombok Uni! - has a bright future and knows quite a few cruising Aussies that call into Teruk Nara a great anchorage). Anyway they were doing a day tour the next day which we joined them on in a "private car" and Mohammed guided us and took a driver. We did cover a lot of Lombok which is lush and green on the northside, they grow rice and get two crops a year, in the south it is much drier and they get only one crop and many failures. Each family has a cow, nor for milk but to work the land and pull the ploughs etc. They rotate paddi's with two years rice, then peanuts and corn or other crops.
We went through a large village market and then started climbing the steep hills of Lombok *highest about 3,000m* through great rainforest where the trees are preserved. We are told every Indonesian is to plant one tree. Many mahogany and teak! As we approach Monkey forest monkey's provide a guard of honour lining the road on both sides. We stop and feed them peanuts - it IS true monkeys love peanuts - and they are gentle and kindly monkeys unlike in some areas where they snatch and steal! A bit like people I guess!!

We go on to a pottery village where the whole village is involved in making some great pottery, and then onto a traditional village where all the women do weaving in the traditional style. It is 60% of their village economy from weaving. The girls cannot get married until they learn to weave - weaving takes a great deal of patience so maybe good training for marriage. When they can weave they get married at about 17 - 19 - the men are a few to ten years older frequently. It may take three weeks to six weeks to weave a Sarong that might sell retail for about $40 to $50 - work out the hourly rate - they weave for about 7 - 8 hours per day every day. Each family has a cow for work and the usual village lifestyle, cooking huts, sleep platforms and low roofed, earthern floor (mud with manure) and thatched or short grass roofs - these are very cool and you replace the roof every five years. Kisrty learned some weaving so can now get married - one of the guys selling the woven items actually suggested he should be the one to "love" her! See photos!

We had lunch at Kuta beach on Lombok (not the Kuta on Bali) and then on to the ex King's Summer Water Palace which was very interesting and has great pools (where the Harem used to swim with a viewing platform for the king) now public pools - Lombok previously had a Balinese King.

Back after a long but rewarding day we were going to go back to Sengigi but saw Island Time and a family we knew in the bay so called over to say hello and were pretty tired so then turned in!

Lombok is beautiful, green, many resorts that are struggling due to the collapse of tourism, mountains, hills and forests, beautiful water and reef, pearl farms.....they have just started an international airport to be completed in maybe 5 years time! A bit slower than Dubai but then the economies are poles apart!

Lombok is great, Teluk Nara a great stopover and anchorage and a lot to do. Would have liked to have stayed longer!

Giday Team Charmar Travellers, Just finished viewing your 88 photos & "a picture paints a thousand words" true enough. Were they Eucalypt trees in the background of Solomans' Village? Also, the hill? on the way back from Solomans' Village; I didn't realise that Sailors wer also Mountain Climbers! Regards
Bima to Lombok

Bima, well this town at first glance perfectly fitted the non flattering Lonely Planet description. A Mudhole in the wet and a hot dustbowl in the dry that will frazzle you. After a walk up and around town we were frizzled which is just one stage past frazzled! More like a scene out of a cheap low budget western representation of a Mexican Village. Goats wandering the littered streets, a typecast 17th century port with old and small dilapidated warehouses from the Port, lining the street to the civic centre. A small market, an amazing number of shops and goods for sale.

Tried the internet cafe, the power is off for the afternoon so that is a no go!!

This Port used to get all the tourist boats from Bali on their way to Komodo and Rinca. It is certainly a great harbour with several of the Bima Schooners in and a couple of mid sized ships.

But meeting interesting people and impressions then change, Johnny came to our boat as interpreter for the local support guru, Johnny used to work in Bali, he is a shoemaker by trade and can handle sewing machines and like equipment. Sine the Bali bombings and devastation of the tourist industry he has moved to Bima and runs his trade there. Today he is helping "Mr Bram", now he is a real happy go lucky guy, he supplies us with Solar or diesel at a slightly high price, but ok as he provides excellent service including putting it in the tanks. His wife owns a small coffee outlet in a row of about a dozen identical "shops"at the busy little Port. Mr Bram has five girls. He also makes sure we are catered for but doesn't speak English thus Johnny helps him out. When we were walking the streets another guy "Mr Chappy"who is a mechanic from Java and is head of the local "Scooter Club" now lives in Bima but has lived in Bali and other places and speaks good English. Scooters are Vespa's including modified. He also rides a motorbike of 75 cc which is the typical local transport. The biggest bikes are 175cc. Now he comes down to the wharf also.

So we have Bram, keeping an eye on our dinghy etc, Chappy and a friend of theirs who works on the boats, mainly cargo now going from Bima to Makasar to Flores and back. So after some negotiation we charter them and their bikes to take us on a little tour. I get to ride in front on Chappy's bike. So we cycle up through the town (good little supermarket, not big but comprehensively supplied) and we do a little trip around town, up to a lookout where the tombs of the first and second sultan of Bima, they introduced the Muslim religion to the area. A great vantage point to see the town, the harbour and Port, the fish farming, and along the coast and back to the farming land. One of Chappy's protege's turns up on a Vespa with a Sidecar looks like ex WW2, with three 13 years olds. They can get away with riding scooters without a licence. Down from the hill we ride through some local farm land and past a quarry where predominantly women and some men are digging out rocks and breaking them with hammer and chisel into uniform sizes. They obviously also live on site as they have sleeping platforms and their meagre possessions there. The farmlands are rich and good, chicken and egg farming also. We come across a festival of children and you people doing sack races, soccer and sports. It is Sunday, and they day before the Muslim Ramaden starts. During Ramaden they fast all day from sunrise to past sunset. A number of restaurants are already closes as they do not open during this month. We ride on around the town and down to the beaches, there are mosques, temples, some massive houses and new properties side by side with traditional village style houses.

In Bima the population is Indonesian, Chinese and Arabic. There are Arabic mosques as well. Apparently everyone gets on well.

The town is undtidy, very very untidy - litter everywhere. Mr Chappy confides in me that the Scooter Club have an annual clean up day of one street and he is disappointed that people will not keep it tidy. The creeks and drains are crowded with litter which must wash out to sea causing the volume of rubbish in the sea.! It is ironic that the rubbish in the streets and drains is not recognised but many of the houses are spotlessly clean and well kept, and many of the women especially and immaculately clothes and presented and obviously take pride in themselves and their houses, but it never translates to the public area.

Heading back through the suburbs --- look out a mob of cows crossing, now a goat, oops just missed those startled chooks! Chappy says, 'be careful" and we get back into the town traffic which is a few cars, many motorcycles and a lot of horse drawn carriages characteristic to this area that race around town with people and goods as well as the hand carts. Well they are much better than Bemo Buses but I couldn't get the girls on one as they thought it was too mean to the horses! The stout little horses are also an icon of this area.

Riding in the traffic is something else, the rule is mix and merge, there are actually some traffic lights here but nobody notices them, see a break- GO. They don't have to wear helmets but many do, we don't have helmuts. Chappy says a number of young boys get killed in the traffic on the bikes but it is not dangerous out of town.

Going back to the Port Dianne is stopped at security by the Harbour Master who wants all our papers. So we go back to Bram's shop for coffee but the Harbour Master pursues us to go out to the boat now. I take him out with the self appointed agent for me and friend of Bram. We have much trouble explaining how Kirsty is there but is not on the cruising permit and someone on the permit who is not here! Big problem says the Harbour Master. I copy off a heap of documents for him and find Kirsty's passport which of course I also copy for him. With a wad of paper in his pocket, fees for the night and a payment for the agent who also takes away our garbage but is very helpful all is well so we head back to shore.

We go looking for dinner but with Ramaden starting tomorrow that is futile so return and eat on board.

Off at 0600 Monday morning with about 160 miles to Lombok we first start motoring out the long entry to Teluk Bima about 10 mile. Then we sail, then we use the MPS, then we sail with the wind forward of the beam, then with it behind, then we gybe, but all in all we have a bit of motoring, and bit of good sailing, and a bit of slow sailing which seems typical of a days sailing in Indonesia. Probably about 6 hours motoring for the day. As night approaches the wind again boxes the compass and we start with a wind behind us but very light. Now the sun comes up here and is light at 0600 and it goes down and is dark at 1800 (6:00pm). By 8 we have a building breeze and soon 20 plus knots. Through the night it blows hard wind at 20 - 25 knots, mainly from the beam or abaft the beam but we have, ALL night, a 2 to 3+ knot tide or current against us and against the wind causing a steep and uncomfortable chop and the feeling that the wind is much stronger. We are also in very open water as we cross a massive bay and pass islands but also we want to be out in the shipping channel to avoid nets, FAD's (fish attracting devices), small unlit boats etc. We pass a number of ships, we put a reef into the Main, in the early hours we also reef the genoa by furling. We don't really want to go this fast but it is good to make up the miles. Our speed through the water is 9/10 knots but across the bottom against the current it is 7 - 8.5 sometimes 9 knots. It is not until after daylight as we start to round Lombok Island that we shake off this adverse current and the water settles a bit.

Next trick is that at 0630 the wind is gone, the sea is flattening, by 0800 we are motoring again! A good things Solar is so cheap!!!

Not a great night but we have covered over 100 nautical miles overnight so can't have everything.

Now we are heading into Lombok which is adjacent to Bali Island. We are going to an area where there is three small islands and will anchor up. I have been up all night so will probably take a break there. Should be good snorkelling and diving off the islands it is written up well. Then maybe tomorrow we will head off to Bali either north or south not sure yet, another day another decision.

Most of the fleet is now back at Labuhan Jobe where the formalities start today - Tuesday 2nd. But we must press on as we have decided to head for Singapore and find a marina before returning to Cairns beginning of October. Now we have to start thinking about timelines again!

Good Morning Team Charmar. Thanks for another descriptive & interesting blog. The good folk working away with hand tools in the quarry make it sound very slave - like. Come to think of it, once when in Denpasar we commented to each other about all of the trash thrown in to the canal in the City, not realising that it eventually finds its way to the ocean. Singapore will be exciting, although Jenny tells me that she prefers HK. Do you plan to have a beautiful hand - made suit prepared for you at the bargain prices the Taylors there ofer? Easy Days - More concern

This morning we took a walk on Komodo early morning without seeing much, would have liked to rouse up the pigs that were on the beach last night. Also took a run around the beaches and mangrove, the reef went right up to the Mangroves in places and the water was crystal clear. Returning to Charmar we noticed one of the traditional sailing ships coming into the bay and it took up the other mooring. They are beautiful vessels and this one was obviously a dive charter with two dual outboard tenders to take the divers to the choice spots nearby. We sailed off our mooring down the bay under a light breeze starting the engines to get through a rather narrow channel between Komodo and an adjacent Island about where we started snorkelling yesterday. Passing through here was done with great care as the chart area we are in obviously has an offset of 900 feet south and 900 feet west, but we do not know exactly what it is. This means that the chart on the plotter is slightly misplaced and our position is not the longitude and latitude the GPS determines so we do a bit of eyeball and manual navigation going through here although I have determined what I think the chart offset is and programmed it into the plotter - but it could be wrong!

The channel is deep but narrow and we go through it and then head off for Gili Banta Island about 15 mile off. The wind stops then comes from right in front so we motor again, we have done quite a lot of motoring in the last week! Across the passage and we pick up a tidal run of about 3 - 4 knots which is running against the wind so the water becomes quite confused and choppy with eddies and whirls and flat spots. As we head to Gili Banta it also has a very narrow channel and entrance and we wonder whether the chart offset still applies. As we get into the bay with the use of Radar and eyeball we determine that the offset is no longer relevant it applied only to Chart Area 3756 Labuan Baho, Rinca and Komodo, but now we are off that Chart. Interesting exercise and reminder that GPS and Plotter positions are not always reliable and if we had followed it implicitly would have ended up on the "bricks".

Tucked into Gili Banta it is approaching low tide so we go and do a drift snorkel, interesting but no where near the quality or intensity of Komodo. Then a beach walk which really puts one in a state of depression - again coming across here the water whilst very clear is full of rubbish - the same again - plastics, bottles, bags, bags, bags, containers, foil packs, packaging and of course numerous left thongs, shoes and more plastics. This beautiful bay, probably more than 50 mile from any major town or population, unoccupied except for us and a couple of local fishing boats of traditional type, but the beach and land behind the beach is covered in this sea dumped rubbish. It would take a team weeks to clean it up. Now I don't blame the sea for spewing it up back onto the beach, after all it came from the land, but where does this end. It seems to me it is a compounding problem as the influence of the west and the companies who can turn a dollar from making plastics and containers and wrappers that are not ecologically friendly are now dumping this product into these highly populated areas with no regard to the impact it has on our world. Just as and similarly as smoking is extinguishing in the western world the companies put their energies into promoting these known damaging product into third world countries and communities where we seen kids of 8, 9, 10 smoking cigarettes. Of course the companies say it is not, "THEIR fault" they only make the product they can't regulate where it ends up, but in pursuit of the holy dollar they continue promoting the product, pushing it and delivering the death and suffering it causes on these unsuspecting individuals and communities to replace the market it is losing now in the educated world. We are doing the same with rubbish. I haven't been to sea on major trips now for a number of years, I think maybe the last was 6 years ago but I just cannot believe the change in the state of our oceans over that time. If it continues, and I see nothing happening to mitigate it, then we will kill of our oceans and condemn them to be one giant rubbish dump! What can be done?

Seeing what is happening here certainly gives one an appreciation of the impact of littering, and of the horrendous liability we are building up in the world with packaging and plastics that are finding their way into our oceans and they just don't break down.

Cape York was a little the same with junk on every beach and place, but not as bad as up here where the currents and tides seem to capture the rubbish and swirl it around in an every day increasing quantity.

Such beautiful areas, what original and rugged countryside, what reef and corals equivalent to the Great Barrier Reef, but what a place to turn into a rubbish dump of world proportions! We cannot blame the local population, much of this product comes from the west!

Perhaps some photo evidence of this state of affairs may jump start some action through for example the group/s that are leading the drive against plastic shopping bags here? Thanks & Regards Lucky
Rinca and Komodo Islands - Set in an area of Islands, Cays and Atolls in clear, so very clear water

This morning up at 0600 to be at the Ranger Station at 0630 for the 5km wildlife walk! The anchorage was so peaceful it would have been easy to sleep in! But off we went with walking shoes and found our ranger. The "long" walk was a supplement to the short visit yesterday with maybe a dozen of us taking part. It was great and of course we saw many Komodo Dragons, deer, monkeys and various sorts of trees. The Komodo incubation period is about 8 - 9 months and the young Komodo's spend the first couple of years in trees so their mothers don't eat them. They are cannibalistic and also eat other dead Komodos! The Komodos mate at this time (and we can assure you of that having caught several in the very slow act!) and then Mum plants the eggs in huge nest mounds they build with various "dummy" holes so predators are put off. They are not exactly pretty or cute by our definition but seem to like their own company. A komodo can eat 50 kg of meat in a sitting; they share their food, but only eat maybe every few weeks or once a month - a bit like a land based croc. They will eat Monkeys, Deer, Goats, Pigs and even take down a Buffalo if they want a good feed! All are native to Rinca.

There are not many birds on Rinca because the Monkeys take the eggs. They also eat land crabs and catch them by putting their tail down the crab hole, when the crab snaps onto it they flick the crab out and eat it for lunch - cunning criters.

We then returned back to the bay late morning having taken in our fill of wildlife and packed up to go to North East Bay on Komodo Island where we had to motor all the way in flat water and no wind but strong swirling and eddying currents, We passed by many numerous islands, reefs, cays and atols some occupied by sailing ships that are so picturesque and are used for tourists. They are real traditional style ships. As somebody said in Labuan Bajo if you wanted to make a pirate movie you could go straight to that town, traditional sailing ships, working old fashioned docks, fish markets, myriad small craft with pop pop motors or paddles - mostly outriggers, and a main street that would do a pirate movie proud! A few modern day pirates selling pearls and carved Komodo's, blankets and woven material just to set it off as well.

Any way back to Komodo - we arrived just after lunch and took one of two moorings in the bottom of the beautiful little bay. Another perfect anchorage! Surrounded by land and Islands on all sides.

We went for a drift snorkel starting at one of the channels into the bay and snorkelled for a couple of hours with myriad fish, turtles, rays, corals soft and hard - as good as! The water temp at 31.5 is not that bad for swimming either. Along the beach we see pigs but we haven't been ashore yet. There should me more Komodo's and no monkeys on this Island - we can hear birds chirping in a mangrove area not far from the mooring.

Tonight we are the sole occupants of this enchanting bay, have planned to leave via a narrow coral lined channel tomorrow heading north west, but only a small trip to a small island where the diving and snorkelling is also said to be great - we shall find out and report back!

Hello There Team Charmar, Trying to stop chuckling from your "Modern Day Pirates selling pearls & carved dragons..." comments! so that I can type. Chuckle Chuckle... Sounds like Bali all over again. Your descriptions of the anchorages and scenery paints quite a picture. I recall a conversation with the Manager of the Coastwatch base on Horn Island (Torres Strait), who lived on a 55ft Ketch extolling the virtues of the cruising areas of Indonesia and environs; quite remarkable according to him. Kirsty actually arrived in Labuan Bajo yesterday and of course we were there at the local airport to meet her at 1100. Some of our "friendly" peal, rug and dragon salespeople were also there doing business with the people arriving and departing!

So we spent the afternoon doing "the rounds of Labuan Bajo" went in the dinghy up to the Eco Resort where some other boats are moored, did the shopping and considered the next day - would we go on a tour to Rinca or go ourselves - stay posted to find out>

Had dinner in Labuan Bajo in the "main strip" again three of us with beer, fruit juice and three courses we spent about $12 --------- a shower of rain and a run down the main street, into the dinghy, over to Charmar to close the hatches, and then of course it stopped. Rain is unusual here at this time of year and the Islands are classically dry.

Turned in early! Awakened to the tim tum music of the traditional hanging cymbal, flat bells that are played at all events. Hard to describe you will have to wait for the photo but they are round about 18 inches across and they hang several from a cross bar and beat them with a soft padded mallet which gives a classic ping/pang to the music. They are used everywhere and can be used as a dowry in some communities. One chain of thought says they were introduced by the dutch. Anyway my guess is that it was practice for the welcome ceremony to be held 2nd September here.

At 0600 we were up and had decided to make our own way to Rinca and the Komodo National Park and World Heritage Area. We are heading out as the fishing fleet is heading in, quite large timber vessels with massively extended outriggers and cross beams - wider than Current Sunshine the widest and fastest tri in Australia! The outriggers are attached to a frame across the boat of timber about 4x2 and very extensive. It is calm as all mornings with a light breeze freshening as we go. An exceptional area we are surrounded on four sides by Islands large and small, navigating through rocky atols, coral cays and beautiful reefs. Just this small area is equal to or better than our Whitsundays or Sailors Paradise. Large traditional style tourist charter sailing ships work from this harbour and are a beautiful sight as they come in and out.

We have the tide with us so steam and then motor sail out with just the port engine running which also tops up the fridges.

Through and between reef, cays and Islands we pass some very interesting villages, one with many boats that looked like a huge marina from the distance. The land is dry and some area rocky and harsh, others soft sandy beaches and swaying palm groves, through reefs the water is deep between the island and reefs, at least 80 metres and much deeper. We travel into a bay which would be a perfect anchorage and then move onto the bay with the ranger stations for Rinca. As we weave between the reefs into a deep bay we see the jetty and anchorage which is superb. Monkeys playing on the beach complete the picture. Here there are Komodo dragons, buffalo, goats, pigs and Cobra snakes.

Our first encounter with a Komodo dragon is right at the jetty where one lies in the shade of the rocks. We walk down the trail through the harsh country with monkeys playing in the trees nearby to register at the Ranger Station and pay our dues. It cost about 540,000 ruppia or $80 and the entry fee is quoted in $US at $15 per person. The ranger says, "You only pay for two, one stays here", referring to Kirsty and then says, "what is your name mother-in-law", well now he thought he could handle dragons! but did he get lesson! Great sense of humour. And off we go to meet the local buffalo and see some giant dragons, at least as big as a large croc. This area with its unique animals and harsh environment is quite similar to the Galapagos Islands in many ways. Now these dragons will kill and eat a buffalo and the occasional monkey who forgets to keep a lookout! Goat is one of their favourites. There is about 1100 dragons on Rinca.

Also here there are a number of local boats from Labuan Bajo, one unloading bananas has to chase the monkey off the wharf - so monkeys DO really like bananas.

After our brief walk we have a shower, but the country is so dry here it must be quite unusual at this time of year and the monkeys go a bit crazy. Back down to the bay the water is calm, and although it is overcast we cruise around the edges in the dinghy and there is good coral reefs, fishes, squid etc - looks like a good place for a snorkel tomorrow, and we might go out to one or more of the reefs we encountered on the way in as well, they were bright and beautiful as we motored in.

Tomorrow we will go for the wildlife walk at 0630, hoping to see more dragons and wildlife of this area, but happy to give the Cobras a miss. Our park permit also covers us for Komodo Island which we will also visit as we go, it is very close by and their is good swimming, snorkelling and diving with Manta Rays, dolphins and coral reefs and drop offs.

Apologies to Lucky, the adjectives do really describe a fascinating and contrasting landscape and fascinating culture. Villages built on the water, seafarers, beautiful sailing ships, fishing "contraptions" dugouts and outriggers that ply the waters with small motors and some with paddle. The country can be harsh, steep and volcanic. The wildlife is equally as hardy and diverse. Dolphins, whales and reefs, cays and beaches, rocky outcrops, deep bays and well protected anchorages, tonight the water is mirror like in the fjord in which we are anchored. Sometimes we are anchored at open bays but so far, touch wood, not many bad anchorages and some just great!

Tomorrow up early, later maybe to Komodo Island or maybe just snorkelling the reefs here.

We continued from around the top of Flores Island yesterday, then took a "short cut" east of Saraya Besar Island to navigate through some fairly narrow channels between large expanses of colourful reef and the Island noting some great anchorages and passing by close to pristine beaches, palm tree shorelines, rocky outcrops and on the other side colourful coral reefs extending for miles. The channels were quite navigable and it was great going through them. Between this Island and Flores was quite a small channel also and the tide was running with us so then we decided to go in close and enter Labuhanbajo harbour from the north rather than the longer southern path. This would get us in at around 1600 and good daylight rather than 1750 and it is getting dark here at about 1800 - we are quite close to the Equator.

An interesting trip in as we pass steep rock islands close by but still in 40 metres of water! and make our way around to the harbour. The water traffic is increasing and as we round into the harbour we note a large rocky area protruding from the water but not shown on the chart! Good that it is low tide and we can see it.

In an anchored in a fantastic harbour by 1630. What a busy place! There are small ships and hundreds of little local ferries and dugouts plying the waters - reminiscent of Venice with busy wharfs and a plethora of water borne traffic. Some great tourist vessels here, sail/dive boats and some of the traditional style and well appointed.

Just before dark we decide to do a sorty to land to check it out! Launching the dinghy I find out why we have noses - it is to protect your eyes when your hand slips off the winch handle which spins under the weight of the dinghy to land a square blow right on the bridge of the nose! Golly gosh I say that smarts!! A little bloody later we go to the Harbour, have a quick look around and return. The wharf is crowded with hundreds or thousands of locals catching ferries and the local boats.

Flicking on the TV and scanning the channels we found that the one channel has what turned out to be the closing ceremony for the Olympics - wasn't it great? This is the only bit we have seen but it was fantastic. Thanks Lucky for the updates and yes I will be claiming from Tourism Indonesia!!! Incidentally they have set 2008 as the year to visit Indonesia - not sure if the rest of world knows about it though!

Today, Monday, had bit of an easy morning and went into town - a four minute dinghy ride - at about midday for what was going to be a couple of hours. Found a real mini mart (the local supermarket) that had all the things we are used to even electronic registers. Upstairs was a clothing floor and on top of that, yes an internet cafe we had heard was quite good. Tried it out, got to load half a dozen photos so there are some now on the blogs and on the gallery at book Indonesia - but don't get too excited - when we went to load the second six we crashed the internet cafe!!

Wandering nonchalantly back down the main street we were accosted by pearl selllers but enjoyed checking out the local shops and quite apparently this area is impacted by tourism (mainly for Rinca Island and Komodo Island where the Komodo dragons live and the great diving areas nearby). Stopped at a street stall for some pastry wrapped fried bananas, and then some of then some Tofu and sprout rolls that are lightly fried (there is a photo of us eating these on the footpath at Maurmere a previous stop. Then another batch of the tasty banana fries.

Wandering down further there are some hillside "restaurants" on balconies overlooking the busy little harbour and the surrounding islands and headlands - absolute picture postcard views. As we go on there is a property on the other side of the road with much work happening to its rendering and steps up to, the sign out the front says Yacht Bar and Bistro so we must go and have a look. Up the stairs we go, "buy some Pearls?" - "no thanks not buying anything today", and there is half a dozen yachties who had done the same thing. They are anchored in a bay a couple of miles away and had "chartered" a local boat to bring them to town for dinner. So we all went off to another restaurant for dinner. Robert and Tina were moored adjacent to us in Bayview Darwin - it was good to catch up.

Great meal again, fish for me - snappper cooked with tomatoes, garlic and accessories and served on a hot platter and for Dianne vegetables with a peanut sauce - another expensive night out with a Bintang Beer cost us about $7.

We see the others back to their "limo boat" where the driver was dutifully waiting and make our way back through the wharfs, past the open fish markets, out to our wharf and back to Charmar.

Kirsty finally managed to get on a flight and is in the air now headed for Bali. Next challenge is Bali to Labuhanbajo. There is one seat on the plane tomorrow at 0900 but we can't call her to tell her and seats on Wednesday - four left at present. There are three small airlines that fly here, again because of Rinca and Komodo and the tourism. Also from here buses and Bemos head out to all areas of Flores Island so it is something of a transport hub, as can be seen from the busy port.

We seem to have made a friend who is now following us everywhere, he is going to sell us pearls and a Komodo dragon carved in wood if he can but we have told him we are definitely buying nothing today. He needs to sell it to help his sister at school, he comes from Komodo Island. Not too sure about the story but he is a nice guy.

We are growing to like Labuhanbajo, our impression today is much better than last evening, but I guess in the dark, with a recently smashed nose, been up all the prior night sailing it did deserve another chance!! Tomorrow we will go up early and try to smash the internet again - this one almost works! Somehow here you can also buy prepaid cards for 3G that connect locally to the internet at local rates - great concept but try to ask for it in English!

Well we had a slow and easy sail through the night, but at least there was enough, or nearly enough breeze to sail even though at times we were down to 1.8 knots of boatspeed and less but the morning brought back a calm and by 0800 we had the port motor going which also has the advantage of power for the fridges etc.

We noticed in daylight to our dismay the state of the ocean here. We are about ten to twelve mile offshore travelling west and there doesn't seem to be any major settlements but the Ocean is like one huge garbage dump! As we motor along through 100km and we are on the 1000 metre or 1 kilometre depth line we continue to pass through extensive patches and ongoing rubbish. Now the water is pristine clear, just beautiful and you can see right into the depths, and this area has fantastic world standard dive area and magnificent coral gardens and drop offs second to none, but also at 100 kilometres long and 1 kilometre deep it might just be the world's biggest garbage dump. For those that saw the 60 minutes report on the state of our oceans about two months ago you will be able to picture what I mean. This is not a few bottles and bits of foam on the surface, this is botles, bags, foam, plastics, netting, webbing, foil, wrappers, plastic containers, bags, bags, bags, white bags, blue bags, green bags, sheets of plastic, rolls of plastic, snack wrappers, multi coloured foil wrappers, logs (they are ok but dangerous), more plastics more plastics, more foil and more. Note just on the surface but floating throughout the various stratas of water as deep as you can see in very clear water and no doubt right down to the 1000 metre level. How can our sealife survive these conditions? How can our oceans tolerate these plastics that don't disintegrate, how can our world survive in its present form if we continue to trash it this way. Out of sight out of mind. We hear so much about global warming and its effects, it could be that global trashing gets us first!! And global trashing we can do something about, and easily.

It seems to me that Indonesia needs tourism in order for this to come to light and for pressure then to bear to make other arrangements for rubbish disposal. There is no recognition here of littering or waste. ln Kupang for example there was rubbish collection organised for the boats by the "dinghy boys" paid each day to look after our dinghies. They would also collect your rubbish - (it went under the wharf where others sorted out the bottles and aluminium cans which had some value, and anything else worthwhile - the balance - well it was just tossed aside for the tide to take out!).

But when you see the state of these otherwise pristine waters, well away from shore and the busy harbours where you might expect (but not like) rubbish and waste - like Hong Kong Harbour used to be - the extent of it and the long distance and dimension of it is rather staggering and frightening. Interestingly we may not think it a problem in Australia but in fact with a current in that direction it would take just 500 hours at 1 knot or 20 days for it to be in Australia!

At times we are now seeming to get clear of it and at 1100 on Sunday morning the sea breeze is piping in and we are back to about 6.5/7knots, not breaking any speed records but still comfortable travelling and making some miles towards our destination which is the home of the Komodo dragons. Surely this is almost equal to the Galapagos area in its uniqueness and should it not get the same level of protection?n

Hoping to be close to our destination by tonight, and we are travelling alone at this stage in front of the fleet that is is dispersing a little, some going to Ende about 80 mile back for the several days of festivities there and others going in different directions. One vessel just reporting and overwhelming reception at a small village not on the rally program they anchored at last night. This seems quite typical if you call into some remote village anchor up and go ashore there is a great welcome and it is courtesy to go and visit the local chief and make yourself known. Tourists, visiting yachts and foreigners would be a rare thing in some of these areas off the beaten track.

Again the sailing conditions are superb, with flat seas and moderate breezes, we would like a little more, but it is close to perfect for cruising.

Here's hoping that something is done about this rubbish situation and the any tons of plastic that are absolutely polluting our oceans each day. If you didn't see the 60 minutes report it is worth looking up on the web, and I now believe it was not exaggeration or beat up. What we have been seeing is worse than what they showed on that report that was somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. Are all our Ocean getting treated this way?

On the Track Again

After a very pleasant stay at Wodong near the beatuiful and serene Ankemere, a miniresort of 5 cabins owned by Swiss Girl (dive instructor) and Indonesian Husband, it is time to move on.

Yesterday we went off in a Bemo in the morning to investigate a local market about half an hour away. It was busy and interesting. To appreciate what the markets are like requires smell (not all good) and sound. There are hundreds of stalls where you can buy anything from thongs, to beetle nut kits (the nut, stick, lime and salt) if you want to numb your mouth and have it all red, to dried fish, sliced fish, whole fish, stale fish, chooks, pigs, sarongs and school uniforms. Fascinating. We spent some hours there, bought a few fruits and veges, tiny loaves of bread, had some lunch from a roadside stall and treked back to Wodong. The market is either side of the main road to Maumere and the traffic filters through the people or the people through the traffic. Stores sell hardware and bulk flour and rice side by side. It seems people also bring in Tamarinds, Coconuts, and Cashews to trade, and I guess buy their groceries, lighting oil etc.

Back to Wodong for a scrumptious dinner at Ankemere, affordable at about $5.50 a head. We had contemplated the trek to the hot springs but it was a warm day and a hot spring didn't sound all that inviting.

Up and weighing the anchor at 0600 in good light we left the basin at Wodong, ready to move on. A light breeze came in behind and we sailed with just the Genoa or headsail for a while before upgrading to the MPS which we flew in about 15 knots for much of the day. This is very pleasurable sailing with slight seas and wind behind us sailing at 7.5 knots or better just with the brightly coloured MPS or Spinnaker drawing us along. It doesn't get much better. Chicken Pizza for lunch from the galley - The seas are balmy, the weather just a tad tropical but not too hot and the breeze keeps it comfortable.

At 1600 the breeze drifts out and then turns so we sock the MPS, and start the starboard engine. We will run it for a couple of hours making water, should do about 100 litres to top up the tanks, and hoping we don't have to run it all night. Classically the wind does drop out at night. Classically we also get a 180- degree wind shift in the afternoon.

We are going to travel through tonight and the sun is just going down in front of us. We are crossing some open water and haven't seen a FAD, (Fish Attracting Device) - a bamboo structure or a buoy - many of which we navigated through this morning but would have NO chance of seeing at night, for a while. We are hoping we are far enough off the coast that they will be scarce because the radar will not pick them up either. The buoys are the size of a 20 litre drum up to a 200 litre drum size and the FAD can be quite material structures but low to the water and unlit.

It has been a great day sail, hope the night is as good and as uneventful.

We are bound for Labunjoey tomorrow and Komodo Island, home of the Komodo Dragon.

Hopefully Kirsty will be able to join us there on Tuesday all going well with her protracted and very frustrating arrangements.

Bureaucracy -v- Bureaucracy

Yesterday and today we are still in Wodong. It is a great bay and about half an hour by bemo (those noisy mini vans - 19 locals squashed into one yesterday! sometimes they don't have floors, yesterday there was a pile (and a pile is the only way to describe it) of goats bellowing like a schoolyard of kids on the top of one with boxes, bags and people) from Maumere our current stopover.

Yesterday we did a town run with a group of others in two Bemos to do banks, internet (ha ha as if that would work), shopping (another ha ha) the markets, interesting and busy and smelly and fishy and rubbish piled up outside with pigs fossicking in it, and Solar - well at least we did get two "jerry jugs of diesel" and then to the welcome ceremony at a small resort just out of town of course on the beach. It was great with the usual singing and dancing, the Kiwi group from our side put on the haka for the locals which they thought was great fun, a very nice snack during speeches followed by dinner which was great. More entertainment during dinner and after. We were then driven back to our 'exclusive' bay where there are just a few yachts. It is quite serene, windy during the day and flat calm at night. The small resort here, did I mention it? consists of half dozen cabins, it is Swiss and Indonesian owned, quite Japanese in style is so very serene, quite and pleasant and a lot of help. It is so nice to walk through and around.

Many people on the Rally are frustrated with the Indonesian bureaucracy but for a reality check it is good to compare with Aust. Now last week Kirsty our daughter decided to defer a semester at Uni and join us for the balance of our time here. It will be a great experience for her and we all agreed to go ahead so she booked a flight to Bali on Jetstar from Brisbane and we arranged for a friend in Bali to book her a room and flight from Bali to Flores Island quite near to where we are. All good - so she packed up in Brisbane and yesterday caught the flight which was from Brisbane to Sydney to Bali. They let her on the flight to Sydney but would not let her fly on because (1) She didn't have a return ticket - of course she was leaving Indonesia by boat (2) she only had five months on her passport - despite the fact that she was only getting a 30 day visa for Indonesia which she planned to get on arrival in Bali as you are entitled to do.

Anyway Jetstar would not agree and would not agree to talk to anyone about it! They sent her off to get a Passport in Sydney of course when she went to the Passports office they wanted her Birth Certificate, My Passport, a witness of course who has known her for 12 months etc. So we had our friend cancel re book the flight Bali to Flores, cancelled the accommodation in Bali, changed our plans etc. So this morning we arranged Locky to get her Birth Certificate faxed down - no they want the original - fortunately she had a friend in Sydney who could act as witness so she went and saw him.

As for us here, well we hired the one motorscooter from the resort in our bay and headed off for Seafarers where the Rally organisers were for the day about half an hour. Now this is interesting - scooter is the main mode of travel in Indonesia - there are thousands of them. The road is narrow mostly bitumen heading in to Maumere, remember it was written off by an earthquake and Tsunami in 1992. They don't have potholes in the road they have craters! The motor bikes are scooters - not large or powerful and barely fast enough to escape the ever present Bemo buses and trucks which often come down the wrong side of the road to avoid the craters, to cross the bridges (or go around them) or just because it is a good idea. Now the traffic isn't really fast although it seems that it is, and everyone seems to mingle through, the one in front has the right of way, and forget about rear vision mirrors, but don't look back or you will ride into a crater, a pig, a goat, a bunch of people or a bemo that has just decided to suddenly stop in the middle of the road. Interestingly most riders wear helmets (of a sort), some passengers - if you hire a ride on a scooter as pillion the rider will have a helmet and a spare but will not offer it to you as passenger. It is also very common for three or four to be on a scooter or a family and the wife and child/baby will not have a helmet but the rider will, women often travel side saddle and you can even carry a goat or pig on your scooter if necessary.

So when we get to Seafarers the organisers have a letter for us to send to the Consulate in Sydney to facilitate a visa for Kirsty so Jetstar will allow her to travel without a return ticket, We fax this to Kirsty and the Consul. She tries to get a Passport (she has a current passport with five months to run, she has a photo licence, she has uni photo id, do you think these prats will offer any assistance (Aussie Foreign Affairs) of course not, they just give her a hard time and no assistance.

We watch a couple of dugout canoe races for the locals and rally participants at Sea World and then head to Maumere on the Scooter to get some more phone credit!! We arrive just as school/s are getting out and the traffic is great. Locals seemed amazed to see the flying foreigners on a scooter and point out what we should do in the traffic (essentially shut your eyes and go anywhere!), oops a massive pig to go around in the middle of the city, oooops again this is a one way street and we seem to be going one way against the traffic - are well put it down to crazy foreigners!!

All the small shops along the 'highway' only have 50,000 Rp cards (about $6) and we want 100k Rp so into the "city centre" we go and get our card. Just as we do the Rally organisers phone and tell us they have made a mistake in the letter could we come and collect another and fax it. Back on to the flying scooter we head out of town towards Seafarers where we collect the letter and refax it. Guess what? The fax cost for six pages was as much as hiring the scooter for the day!! Cup of coffee, quick look at the stalls along the beach, (the town of Maumere is pretty ordinary (a master of understatement) but the beaches and watersides and countryside is fantastic with great view across water to mountains and the active volcano in the opposite direction. Coloured lakes in the surrounding hills, industrious subsistence farm workers along the road sides, varied standards of housing from western to traditional old to new and the clay/mud brick of the current times. Green fields, pigs, goats and people, people people. Mini traffic jams along the way as the roadside markets clutter with people clammering in and out of bemos and on scooters with their purchases or stock.

Back to Ankemere at Wodong, couple of litres of Benzine into the scooter at about 90 cents per litre from a roadside stall - these exist along the way and you buy one litre bottles of benzine just as you would a bottle of milk. How good to be back at our haven, although it has been.........exciting? is that the word?

Couple of chores to do, yesterday the inlet pipe to the hot water system blew off draining the tank of hot water into the bilge - just an old nylon hose gone hard, so it is a cautionary warning and I am going around checking the hoses and hose clamps on every seacock and skin fitting as it would not be as easy to fix possibly if one of these unexpectedly came off. Whilst head down and up in the engine room take the opportunity to make a mess and grease the universals, check the oils and bits and pieces and remove a couple of spots of water that shouldn't be there!

Tiaki come over and we have a drink and biscuit and finish the day realising that the Australian Bureaucracy is no better than the oft criticised Indonesian Bureaucracy, that people with a little power and no common sense who want to be difficult will always make life difficult for others (simply because they can!) but the bay we are in as the sun sets gently on the glowing horizon over water to the west, and the wind and water both become flat calm, that, at the end of the day, does it really matter?

We go off to another little accommodation resort, family run, traditional cabins, not as beautiful as Ankemere for dinner at about $3 a head and beer at about $2.50 so for $4 each have a nice but slowly delivered dinner and are long ready for bed - having sat up till midnight last night trying to send a simple attachment on non existent internet that nearly worked but the two hour attempt turned out to be futile. Third world communications, (except for mobile phones that work everywhere!!)YES, 1st world scenery, patience, family values, waterways, food YES - Bureaucracy in each country - yes about the same - common sense out the window, power and domination over others 'because we can' for sure.

Another very intersting read, albeit with some challenges. It looks as though things are going to work out OK. I am told that entry to the USA these days is particularly stringent with photos, fingerprints & ID for all. There was a case not so long back in the USA, where a fairly high profile Aussie entertainer was refused entry due to the wrong visa, and was turned around on the next flight home. I am enjoying your description so much of what seems to be idyllic cruisig circumstances, that I am wondering are you Folk on a commission with the Indon Tourist organisation? - or it is really that good!

A stopover and feet up!

Wodonga has proven to be a delightful anchorage with few yachts! and those mostly friends but you could count them on one hand. Yesterday we on board for the morning. Took a small tank over to Tiaki who was cleaning under his boat. Put a whole lot of plots into the chart plotter from 101 anchorages in Indonesia and a few other chores.

Mid afternoon we went to shore and what a delightful place is hidden behind the bush lining the waterfront. We landed at a small "resort"about 5 or 6 traditional/modern cabins with a central block what a charming location and how beautifully presented. Quite Japanesey, with pebble paths and ponds, a rice paddy beautifully laid out, water lillies and a big fat pig - as happy as a pig in mud - in one of the terraced ponds. Cashew trees abound with sweet cashew apples and the nuts that must be roasted before they can be eaten, papaya, berries and other produce. Goats, pigs and dogs. This little boutique resort is partly Swiss/Indonesian owned and what a place to get away from it all. We booked for dinner at the restaurant (there are about 6 tables) and all they yachties (about 12) and the guests had a wonderful buffet there and filled the place up! Tasty local produce, tofu dishes, fish, watercress, ginger etc. We had great dinner there of very tasty and very fresh products and will go back again another night!

This area was devastated by an earthquake and tsunami in 1992 but the reefs and surrounds are reported to be recovering well. There is a Japanese wreck for diving on not far from where we are anchored. An omnipresent volcano with the bare top and colour of sulphur around the crest, no doubt the cause of the earthquake, sits not far from where we are. As we walked down the street we were taken by the cleanliness of this area, in Indonesia littering and trash just do not seem to register - have a drink throw the container out the window, open a smoke through the wrapping out the window.......,. There are some lovely houses, in well kept yards with vege gardens and small irrigated plots, it is clearly a dry area. People come out to greet us and invite us in to see their areas with our non understanding of Bahasi Indonesian (which we should have learned some of) and their lack of English it is mostly sign language but they show us their small mud brick kilns that many houses or groups of houses are working on. They dig out the clay and make mud bricks building first a kiln shaped structure and then place the bricks in for firing. This seems to be the latest technology for building. These are industrious and hard working people, they sweep their yards, paint their houses, and many are building new houses and structures. Good building making the most of the surroundings, building on the natural rocks, terracing for gardens and running water seems to be available. The road is lined with bananas, cashews, kapok, and other trees. Bemo's (it seems the one thing that is universal in Indonesia so far - or the small van/buses/taxis with boom boxes, boys hanging off the side, people stuffed inside pass occasionally. But it is a quiet road, just like a beach village back home, with houses along the waterfront and some on the other side of the road into the foothills. A concrete welcome sign marks the start of the village. There are some satellite dishes at some places! Kids run out to greet us and the people on motor scooters all wave and smile as they go past. The occasional work truck with a few on the back trundles back and forth.

This road goes into Maumere a significant town about 45 minutes away. We will go there tomorrow and take a couple of "jerry jugs" to top up the diesel or Solar - having used maybe 50 or 60 litres during the last week with necessary motoring and we run the genset for an hour or so each day to keep the fridges down and the hot water up and also to top up the dive tanks. Must convert the freezer to 12 volt one day and then we would only need to run the genset every three days as the hot water stays hot for at least that long. The Energo-Tec which runs on the Port Engine is fantastic as whenever we have to motor we have 220 volts and can the fridges and other 240 appliances but I still have a minor issue with the wiring with running the hot water off it - I get a current leakage indicator which is not good so do not run it through the boats wiring. Thought we had it solved in Darwin with the first electrician I have found who could properly diagnose the problem and with an isolation switch we nearly had it pickled but not quite! But it is great not to have to run the genset very much. If I could solve this one last issue we could remove the genset all together and maybe put another Energo-Tec on the Starboard side - they are just fantastic for power @ 4kva 220 volt and 18kg in weight and no separate engine required it doesn't get much better!

The WaterMaker runs in the Starboard Engine room which has an isolated start battery so I generally run the starboard engine to produce the 38 amps @ 12 volt for the watermaker which seems to work really well. We had a few teething problems with the Echo-Tec which were unusual in nature but seem to be fully resolved and it is very easy to use and produces good quality water at about 150 +/- ppm solids which is very acceptable. It is great to be able to shower and wash down etc without having to worry too much about water although we keep the tanks at about 50% "just in case" which is about 500 litres still. But it takes half a tonne off the boat compared to having full tanks. With diesel we try to keep it topped up in the main tanks and when we can two "jerry jugs" which we use to transport the diesel and also as reserve if we get to fill them up.

It is now Tuesday morning and we are off to Maumere with our two jerry jugs and with a few others have 'chartered' two Bemos for the day or half day to do the rounds, go to the markets, fill up our jerry jugs, go shopping, if we can find an internet that flys faster than the average pigeon we will try again to upload some photos.

This morning it is beautiful and calm, flat water, sunny and tropical. No doubt the breeze will spring up as the day progresses. We will take the covers off, as although the anchor seems to be well dug in don't want to take any chances whilst we are away for the day.

Around the top of Flores to Wodonga

After passing through Selat Flores we picked our way through fish pots and traps and anchored in a beautiful bay in 15m of pristine crystal clear water where you could see the coral, rocks and the anchor clearly sitting on the bottom. There were quite a few boats but we snorkelled and in the morning left early in a very light breeze which built slowly as we sailed on. The wind picked up as we went and we started to motor sail and eventually had 20 knots and a great sail doing 9 knots as we crossed a broad bay. Charmar loves these conditions and we quickly overhauled a mono that had been off in the distance. As happens here after an hour and a half the wind petered out and we were back to motor sailing and making water! The day became really tropical after the breeze died out it became hot and balmy. A couple of hours later the breeze came back from the south which was cool and fresh and good for sailing again. It seems we get a real sea breeze, land breeze pattern and some areas are just wind channels where every boat seems to get the breeze whenever they go through it.

We rounded the scorpion tale of Flores which is the northernmost area and progressed down around in the direction of Maumere but often close to the coast, and we cut through some narrow channels between Pulu Besar and Dambillah Islands which were surrounded by colourful reef and reputed to be fantastic dive sites. The islands had large and dense traditional style villages and one of islands had a large stilt village on the water. The top end of Flores was quite bare of population however everywhere there are the odd huts and traditional houses doting the hillsides. There were a number of fishing dories in and through the channel and we always had the welcome smile and big wave from all the people on boats. PAUSE:- it made me reflect on how we treat Indonesian's who drift into our waters!?! Are we like the ugly neighbour that complains about the tree reaching over the fence or the kids cutting through their yard! I know we need to stop illegal fishing in our waters but do we respect other people as people? Have our respective governments painted a perception of Indonesia and its peoples in our minds? Questions only! These delightful island dwelling people are very welcoming and friendly. Clearly the city dwellers in Jarkata and Bali may be quite different but I would rather their welcome than ours!

We contemplated staying the night at the small islands surrounded by reef in idyllic conditions but in consideration of possible winds thought we should go to Flores to anchor and maybe come back across the 8 miles to the islands for snorkelling/diving/visiting another day. With a fresh breeze we were making good time across the bay in and out of the fish traps and bouys. A nice little bay at Wodong we went in around a submerged rock in deep water and started sounding for an anchorage, what looked to be a nice sandy bottom continually rejected the amorous advances of our anchor with the bottom falling from 15 metres to 50 in about the same distance. We went a bit deeper into the bay dropping the anchor in twenty metres of water but to get this depth we are less than 50 metres from the beach - quite close when we blow back but still 6 metres of water!

With the shallow depth alarm and the GPS anchor alarm finely set to sound if we move an inch either way we are anchored at about 1600. 1630 a call from Forza a Schionning Cat for sundowners at 1700 was welcomed and picking up the crew from Tiaki in the white limousine we whiled away a few hours on Forza returning to a calm, calm night on board and a good long sleep.

This morning, Monday, seems to be public holiday for Indonesia and we have seen a lot of signs out in various places with some sort of anniversary date on 17.08.45 - 17.08.08 and the kids are not at school. Talking about school it was interesting yesterday morning that seemingly anchored in the middle of nowhere a bunch of kids in school uniform were sitting on the beach at 0630 watching the boats and seemingly waiting for a school ferry or something. The kids even in remote areas all seem to take school seriously.

Some of the people on boats have visited remote schools and taught an english song like "Old MacDonald had a farm" etc. School visiting is quite popular.

This morning we are having an easy day, well I suppose they are all easy days, but on board there is always something to be done. It is a glorious day, the breeze is just coming up at 1030 - as it does. Running the genset for the fridges and hot water. Have a dad and son fishing near us in a dugout with a drag net. Some traditional boats along the beach and some thatch and grass buildings nearby - not sure what they are. There must be a road nearby as we hear a truck occasionally (and of course the odd horn - if there is a car or truck anywhere there is a horn sounding) but otherwise we seem to be away from everything. Somewhere here though there is a "resort" where there are good meals, interpret the word "resort" very widely. About 8 nautical miles along the coast is "Seaworld". It is said that a couple of nights ago some other people went for a shore visit to see a monkey that had been shot with a bow and arrow that was being taken home for dinner! A bit close to cannibalism for me but who are we to be judgmental on what people should or should not eat? Fish is clearly a big part of the diet here.

We might stay put a few days. Kirsty, our daughter, is flying to Bali on Wednesday and then getting a flight to Maumere not far from here - about 2 hours flight from Bali - could be a slow plane of course, so we are looking forward to that.

All is going well at present and life on board is great. Still haven't caught a fish despite towing a line for 580 nautical miles!! and losing a few lures. When I went to replace them I realised how sparse my tackle box for gear, although it probably doesn't matter if you are not catching fish!! The locals are far more expert at it than me!!

Selat Flores - and to North Flores

This morning we upped the anchor at about 0830 and headed off to chase the boats that were anchored with us last night and had set off earlier.

It is quite unusual here where just up anchor and head off in the direction we want to go and see what happens. We leave without a destination in mind, may sail 20 or 30 or 80 nautical miles, maybe we sail 20 miles in two hours and then 30 in the next 8 or 9 hours, sometimes we do ten knots (almost with no sails) and sometimes we do 0.8 - 1.8 with full sails. We often sail very close to the shore but in 100 metres of water, and sometimes we cut across bays and go wide. The Islands are all steep and must run straight down to very deep water at the same angle. In some places there is a small ledge near the shore of 50 - 20 metres and if lucky and then 5 metres and this is ok for anchoring. As you come into these areas you start in 100's of metres of water then 100+ and then it jumps up to just 50 and you are quite close to shore but would like to anchor in more shallow water.

After leaving this morning we set the Genoa and sailed up towards Selat Flores or a straight or channel between Flores Island and Adonara Island. The straight narrowed towards the top, or northern end before going out to sea. Flores Island side had very substantial settlements along it with wharfage and an obvious Port well established. Ferries plied between the two islands across the straight and the omnipresent fishermen were there with nets and lines. We were catching the three other boats as we entered the Straight which was flat water, great scenery, a very interesting township and nice breeze. We ran one motor to chill the fridge and Dianne took the opportunity to do the washing whilst we had the power on. As we progressed we started to pick up the tidal current. One, two and then three knots propelling us along. We cut the engine and with just the genoa or headsail we were doing 8 + knots boatspeed with just a few knots of breeze. Further along as we approached the end of the straight we had 9+ and then 10 knots with little breeze. I reckon we had about 6 knots of current with us. The water was flat but swirling until we were near the end of the Straight when Tiaki called on the radio from infront of us and suggested we put the stormboards in as they had taken a wave right over the boat as they left the straights in turbulent water.

Having been forewarned we could see this coming in front where there were breaking waves at a tumblehome where the water pouring the straight met up with the ocean swell from the Flores Sea. Tiaki had suggested we go left and we could see flat water on the right hand side of the channel. As we got closer we could see flat water on the left as well. We took the extreme left and sailed through the gentle swells but avoided the breaking waves and turbulent centre of the channel. Another yacht behind, which was in the anchorage with us last night, came through more to the centre and we have video of them rising and falling as they crashed through the waves. For us it was a gentle but great experience. The breaking waves in the centre of the channel were blocking out a local ferry on the far side of the channel who also took the shoreline and a smoothish entrance.

Back out into the Flores Sea we cut across open water which scattered with fish traps and platforms and dugouts and fishermen, one who was flying a kite from his boat, not sure why but it seemed to have another line off it. Now these things consist of possibly a drum or plastic bottle, right through to a bamboo platform, some with warning flags on them, and some bamboo platforms with thatched roofs that presumably people stop on from time to time or fish from, Some are quite substantial and sometimes you see a line of floats that obviously is a net or long line and I wonder if nets are strung from one platform to another. Anyway we sailed on through going around the boats and structures as we we could, but if you came through at night you would have absolutely NO hope of seeing some of them at all.

If there are nets we must have sailed over them as we didn't get caught up but I preferred to sail rather than motor and have a prop suck one in the way they do.

Out around further was passed a small atol with a massive coral reef around and from it which would have been good to snorkel or dive but we pressed on as although we did ten miles in one hour we have only done 2 or 3 for each of the hours after it!

As we rounded the top of Flores we noted a fingerhead of land behind which may be a suitable anchorage. As we reached it we must have been right as there were already twenty boats anchored up there!! Well in we went and anchored only 30 metres off the beach in 15 metres of crystal clear pristine water where we could see the anchor and chain on the bottom and the little crab next to it!! Many dugouts came out to us asking for books and we gave away some swimming goggles. The kids loved the readers digests, the adults must have been hoping for something more spicy!

In this water we had to go for a snorkel over the corals and reefs around us and right up to the beach. Never think that we have a mortgage on coral reefs in Australia - there are great reefs, diving and snorkelling off the beach here. And it is very cheap!!! (two readers digests and two pair of swimming goggles).

It is amazing where the time goes to when sailing. Even on an easy day like this where we started late and only covered about 30 miles and finished at about 4.00 pm with a swim after anchoring there seems little time. Of course there is always something to be done on a boat and keeping all systems going keeps you passively busy all day.

It is interesting to reflect as we sail past the towns and villages as to how revenue and income is generated in these areas and many people live a subsistence life. Many live in what we might refer to as weekenders or beach huts on coconut lined beaches that could be on the Australian Coast anywhere. They are scenic, with hills or mountains as a backdrop, there are thousands of palm trees and sandy beaches, mangroves areas, and steep rocky bluffs that fall into the water. But these people live a simple life without the trapping and issues of the western world, where family and friendship comes first, where consideration is given to the other person, where ego is constrained and modesty a virtue, where they balance use of nature with their needs, and above all the focus is on consumption for NEED not for GREED as is so commonplace in all western communities where there is aspiration to gather material goods to demonstrate wealth and prestige, not to gather and consume to meet your daily needs for food and water for subsistence. These are happy people despite what we might see as a lack of material goods or possessions.

Sundowners now, a gin and tonic as the sun sets on this stunning location and then it is time to think about dinner - and another day is done, I wouldn't previously of thought of Indonesia as paradise - however this is but another day in paradise!

Philosphical aspects are very interesting. I enjoy Maslows' heirarchy of needs and wholheartedly agree with your discussion about NEED and GREED. To re-evaluate ones' circumstances when confronted by others' circumstances of extreme poverty often causes a sea change or paradigm shift. Recently I regularly came into contact with village folk from the PNG coast, where the Govt makes no pretense of providing Education, Health or similar services. Many people (especially children) die from Tuberculosis and Malaria; the former considered eradicated from the Western World (but increasing and perhaps not being controlled at all in these villages). Thanks for another Great Picture.
Selat Solor - or Straight of Solor just below Flores Island - How good it is to get away!

Yesterday we left Lombarto and the boats dispersed in all directions. The day before had been long and gruelling and the farewell ceremony running until midnight. As we drifted off on a flat sea in magnificent conditions we elected to go below Adonara Island rather than back up the same passage we had come in on. This took us away from the fleet and just ourselves and a couple of other boats motored slowly off in this direction.

Conditions were calm just a wiff of breeze right on the bow so as the day progressed we ran first one motor to chill the fridge and freezer and then the other to make water, the first since leaving Darwin, and to make a steady and slow passage away from Kawula across Selat Lamakera or the Straights of Lamakera towards Selat Solor. We were in no hurry and in these conditions speed, time cruising all merged into one with no pressure to be anywhere or get anywhere. As we cruised along the coast close to Adonara Island we passed many villages, new houses getting built including a large modern house with a tiled roof, something we had not seen in Indonesia before.

The trip down Selat Solor was quite spectacular with the current against us, then with us, then swirling and the same again. I now have the currents and tides fully worked out here, you stand facing your nose in the direction you want to go and the tide and current will then flow from that direction! Progressively the breeze predictably came in, conveniently the wind dies off every night and comes in mid morning. We set the headsail and motor sailed on through the Straights. Inter- Island ferries ply the Islands loaded with people, motor scooters and whatever else. Often overloaded and poorly trimmed we pass several of these in each direction. A larger ship is seen from time to time that goes to the major ports presumably with people and cargo. Of course then there is the small and smaller fishing boats here and there setting nets or line fishing. It is necessary to keep a constant lookout for floats and nets.

We passed a fairly new port type complex with a new building. Constantly dotted along the Islands are villages on the coast and villages right up to the top of the hills and mountains.

At about 2.30 we chose a destination to anchor up for the night just before Selat Flores and headed towards it. How nice it was to be away from the crowd, although it was great being with them at the time. Our good friends Jenny and Peter on Tiaki were tracking down this path as well and we notified them of our destination.

Arriving in the bay we had chosen we sounded the area as the water throughout Indonesia is very deep from hundreds to thousands of meters and much to deep for anchoring. Close to shore we found 30/40 metres and even closer, we are talking a hundred metres or so we found twenty and below so anchored up. A little later Tiaki joined us and two Kiwi boats went past to round the point only to find the water too deep for anchoring so came back and we gave them a position in front of us.

The wind then died down to a flat, calm and beautiful anchorage and we call congregated on Charmar for sundowners which continued on until about 8.30 under a full moon on dead calm water. Is it just so serene and beautiful to be out here. The surrounding islands and patches on the hills light up as the villages with electricity showed themselves. Fishing vessels went out to do their thing and the occasional ferry, one all light up (although no nav lights) and quite loud music (was it a bemo ferry) looked just like a dinner cruise boat only it continued past down the straight so must have been a ferry.

We are off a small village but yesterday evening the "dad's army" or cadets were drilling and marching left, right, left right, whistle whistle whistle!!! This morning at about 5 they were up at it again. This is a very small village has a large concrete landing dock from days gone by, a few motorcycles and the omniprescent kids although we did not go ashore here, revelling in some quite time and the great conditions.

This morning there is a breeze coming up and we will head off through Selat Flores after debating the tides and currents last night. As a fairly narrow passage there could be a strong tidal run here. Again the conditions are good.

Coconut groves line the coast, the country is a bit dry and parts burnt off on the steep hillsides.

The sailing areas we are in at present are superb with sheltered and protected waters between the islands with the odd passage back out into open waters as we break free from island areas.

The country and waterways are quite different than I anticipated and pictured. We should have expected but there are villages everywhere.

It is now 7.30 and we depart at 8.00 for the Selar Flores which should be interesting so we will be off and readying now.

Back from our French trip - how different from yours! Great to be travelling with you on Charmar - well, that's how it feels! Looking forward to those pictures!
