The R/V CAPE HATTERAS is owned by the National Science Foundation and operated under a renewable Charter Party Agreement by the Duke/UNC Oceanographic Consortium. Her homeport is at Duke University Marine Laboratory in Beaufort, North Carolina.

Chirp Geoprobe

The Chirp Geoprobe (From Altan Turgut, NRL) is a research tool to measure sound speed and attenuation in top 1 meter of marine sediments. It measures the time-of-flight of sound between its four spikes mounted under the unit. It is a self-contained unit and it can be deployed in full ocean depth by using CTD wire available on any UNOLS research vessels. Data collection and underwater video recording is monitored in real-time by communication through the CTD cable. In addition, it has chirp sonar subbottom surveying capability in full ocean depth.
