Unexpected but pleasant call!!
Vanessa
11/19/2011, Santa Maria, MX (?)

Hi all,
I receiced a pleasant but unexpected call late this morning. My Dad and Leiann called via the HAM radio (they talked to a volunteer HAM radio operator and the volunteer called me to relay his messages). They are doing well, once again Leiann had issues with being sea sick. I thought that they had planned to get antinausea medicine in Turtle Bay, but perhaps they weren't able to find any....? I believe the operator stated that they had arrived in Santa Maria (please forgive me if this isn't correct, I need more Mexico geography lessons ;) ). They were able to find a nurse there who had an antinausea remedy for her to try. They send their love to everyone back home!! More to come later....

Thanks, Vanessa! I looked up Santa Maria and you're probably right...it's further south from Turtle Beach. Looks beautiful! Too bad Leiann keeps getting seasick, I hope that remedy works for her.

Hola Amigos! Thanks Vanessa for updating our blog so others can keep up with us. I can barely keep up with us. We left Ensenada and from that point on I had no problems being sea sick. In fact if anyone out there needs to learn how to throw up I believe after 6 days of it I am an expert, and as some of you know I really don't believe in experts. I did however manage to do my watches on the night shift despite being ill. For those of you that don't know what a watch is the crew take turns sailing/motoring to the next destination. Depending on how many crew decides how many hours. My longest was about three hours because Dave was concerned about me throwing up over the side of the boat and being lost at sea! Not in his lifetime, he is stuck with me.......so finally we arrived in Turtle Bay along with our new found friends and spent the first day in beautiful sunny weather hanging on the beach at Rojellios Place. That's where we are now. Everyone brings snacks and we just hang out, go to the market, check out the small fishing village and try to speak Spanish to the locals. Life in this little village is so very different than our other life and it teaches you to slllooowwww down. Not a bad thing for any of us to learn. Take for instance the 1st day we tried to get money on our visa, no ATM, so we had to get it from the mercado or market. No big but we were told to come back manana (tomorrow for you gringos). Then we found Christy (and Neil) and they have immersed themselves into the community in a short two weeks. She said (by radio) to meet her at the market at 10:30 the next morning....we did and waited for an hour and we never saw her. The problem? We had changed time zones and we were on our own time clock! Finally after two more trips to the market we managed to get actual money in our hand. The next two days we stayed on the boat due to some inclement weather and today we are back at our spot on the beach hanging with the cruisers and doing what we want, when we want. Fish tacos later! Tamales tomorrow! Adios!

Thanks for keeping us posted. Loved the pictures of Ensanada. Leiann, you really did cut off your hair! Wow! I don't think I've seen your hair that short for many years! Glad you are having a good time. Wish we were there in the sunshine! Any change you might make it to Costa Rica by February?

You look so happy, Leiann!! And that makes me happy for you. Sorry you've been seasick--reminds me of that fun drive up the mountain in Oregon! Guess you can't get out and walk at sea, can you? Love you!!

I spoke w/ Dave today at 1740Z via short wave radio and he seemed to be doing well. I was in an airplane at 35,000ft over the middle of Kansas as W4IFR aeronautical mobile. I enjoyed the chat and the chance to talk to someone really "living the dream". Fair winds and following seas.

GLAD TO HEAR YOU GUYS ARE HAVING SO MUCH FUN. LEARNING TO SLOW DOWN AND UNHOOK FROM IT ALL SOUNDS LIKE MUEY PERFECTO. LEIANN YOU LOOK THINNER ALREADY! IS IT THE BOUT OF SEASICKNESS OR ARE YOU TRIMMING UP LIKE DAVE?

:( I haven't been able to tune into the Seafarer's net to hear exactly how my Dad and Leiann are fairing. When they called on Nov. 7th they were leaving Ensenada and Leiann was establishing her sea legs (slightly motion sick). My Dad wanted me to say a hello to all friends and family tuned in, and for me to wish Jess a congratulations for him, since she is expecting her first baby at the end of December. I am new to reading the information provided on the Roll Call page of the Seafarer's Net, but to me it looks as if they are experiencing a decent amount of wind. I will provide an update tonight or tomorrow morning after they have checked in through the HAM radio.

Hi to all. We had planned on leaving on Saturday but now am waiting for a cold front to move thru (high wind and sea's) predicted (we don't need anymore of those). So maybe head off to San Quentin Monday (no internet or cell there). We have been having a good time wandering around town (out side the tourist zone). I will post some new pix's in our album. Pictures not in the tourist brochure. Bye for know Dave and Leiann

if you get below Manzanillo, you should check out Barra de Navidad. It's a small town that you might enjoy; I know a couple people who like to winter there.

10/30/2011, Mexico!

High everybody. We have finally made it to Mexico! We had a pretty boring trip down from San diego. However this was probably good for Leiann's first off shore trip. We didn't even put a sail up as near zero wind the whole way. Leiann did her first "night watch" 2-4 am all by herself in the cockpit in the dark! Leiann is afraid of the dark so no light matter for her. She did great. Although she did use the sea sick pills even with little swell. Maybe next leg she will get a little more acclimated. We tried to leave at night from San Diego (11pm) so we would make it in before dark to a new port with questionable navigation lights. Well after motoring for 20hours we came in in the dark. We motor at 4knots with no adverse current. But we had north bound current nearly all the way so averaged 3knots. That's 3.6 MPH for you land lubbers. If your'e in a hurry wrong boat. We aren't so burning only a pint a hour is worth it. We ran into a lot of kelp coming in as we could not see it. But our trusty little 9 hp Yanmar chopped it up. We did have to back up a couple of times to clear kelp off the keel, as we would get down to 1.5 knots with the extra drag. We got tied up by 8 pm and had a nice walk around the grounds of the Hotel Coral. It's a classy joint, we feel a little under (boated) dressed, here. The next day we layed around the pool and sun bathed, swam, hot tubed, eat your hart out you Washingtonians! After that we we into town (on the hotel shuttle for free) plus a little tip. We walked all around town and had a nice day. Today we didn't even make it to town. We laid in bed and drank coffee reading our books til 11am, then went to the hot tubs as it was pretty cool today. Now we are headed back to the boat. Leiann is going to make some chicken salsa rice toco's. Latter from the little boat the could Chrysalis II

So great to hear how everything is going. I admit I'm a little jealous! Lol! Who are we going to eat ice cream with at Big Scoop now when we come up? Take care Dave, and give Leiann a big hug from me, Kevin and the kiddos. Stay safe! At least I know where to find you at now! Leiann left out all the good stuff about having to take sea sickness pills etc, etc.

Hi Leiann: Well, thanks so much for email/info mail. I had no idea where you were. You've landed temporarily anyway and I'm hoping the weather continues to be what you want and please keep us posted. I will check the blogsite as you suggest. I passed along your initial email to Natalie. Don't know if she has computer access so wanted to keep her in the loop. Hugs and Kiss to ya, girlie! - Roberta
