Found Anchorage Off Isla La Mina

04 September 2007 | La Mina, Las Perlas, Panama
Chris
First we looked at the anchorage between Chapera and Mogu Mogu, where a season of Survivor was filmed. It was feasible to anchor there but it did not look great. We headed further South to Casaya but the entrance was too shallow unless we wanted to wait for tide which makes anything feasible here, as it is currently a 16 foot swing. Supposedly, they sell pearls in the village at Casaya which at one time was the reason for the name, Las Perlas.

After debating our options we headed to the pass between Isla Viveros and Isla La Mina. The Zydler guide advocates going completely in to the pass to anchor. We tried this but the current was over a knot. Instead we anchored far off the beach on the east end of La Mina. The current was much better here but we had to be mindful of the rocks closer to shore.

We took the dinghy around Isla Mina looking for coconuts and places to spearfish. We landed the dinghy on a big beach and explored until sunset. It is uninhabited and very beautiful.
