Island Hopping

11 October 2007 | Murcielagos, Costa Rica
Chris
We left our smooth anchorage in Mata Cana to head back to a rolly Playa del Coco in order to try to get our permission to go to the Murcielagos islands. Fortunately the right person was there so we got the tickets($10 per person per day). We also needed to get a zarpe (clearance) from the port captain (free). All of this took about an hour and then we were off.

The wind was on our beam 15-20 knots which means 7-8 knots of boat speed while towing the dinghy. It was a little lumpy but fortunately the good speed had us there in 3 hours. Kim, my sister (pictured above with me), did not get sick which was good. Last time she sailed with us outside of Miami both her and her 1 year old daughter Brooke got sick. They had eaten blueberry pancakes for breakfast...enough said.

We put the anchor down in the bay between the two most eastern islands in the Murcielagos. The park station is in this bay so we went ashore to show our tickets. The park official could have cared less. There was a big group of American biology students camping on the islands. They gave us the low down on all the good stuff to see. Supposedly the turtles are coming ashore tonight to lay there eggs so we may get to see them.

Janelle and Kim took the new kayak in to the beach. Later Janelle, Andrew and I went snorkelling. The Murcielagos are supposedly Costa Rica's best diving and snorkelling. It is definitely the best snorkelling we have done in Costa Rica.
