On Anchor at Direction Island

22 August 2006 | Cocos Keeling
Julie
The anchorage in Cocos Keeling if off Direction Island, which is one of the several islands that surround the inner lagoon. The island is uninhabited, but there is a neat area with picnic tables, bbq's and a shack where yachties have left signs, flags, etc for the past 20 years or so. As you can see, the water is the most crystal clear blue and the bottom is nothing but white sand. The water is so clear, in fact, that you can see black tipped reef sharks swimming just feet from the boat. Fortunately they don't want anything to do with humans, so it's safe to swim. Although the wind has been a steady 15+ knots, the anchorage is protected enough that there is very little swell or chop. I'd have to say this is pretty close to paradise.
