At the southern end of Direction Island, the island we are anchored behind, is a shallow pass in the reef. The current here flows constantly towards the lagoon, sometimes as great as 4-6 knots because the waves resulting from the trade wind break on the outer reef and force the water in one end of it. The snorkeling here is superb. Lots of large fish and sharks hang out in the pass. Snorkelers utilize the current to drift along effortlessly and view all of the fish and coral.
