We Survived the Gulf of Tehuantepec
09 November 2007 | Gulf of Tehuantepec, Mexico

We made it across without too much hassle. The wind finally came up and we zipped across the Boca de Tonala and Boca de San Francisco Shoals. We had 25 to 30 knots on a close reach with boat speeds between 8-10knots. It was a long day pulling and shaking reefs and trying to keep our speed up and not get too far from shore. We only passed one other yacht going the other way. After 3 weeks of gales preventing any boats from crossing we thought there would be more boats heading south. As we headed in to Salina Cruz on the far side of the Gulf we decided to anchor in Bahia Conejo (rabbit bay...i think) instead of pushing through to Huatulco. We hussled in to the bay as it was getting dark and dropped the hook in 30 feet of water as the surf on shore sounded louder than we would feel comfortable any closer. Anyways we were glad to have crossed the Gulf of Tehantepec as it is just one more challenge completed that is necessary before we can get home to California.
