Leaving the Rolly Anchorage Behind..

15 March 2008 | Santiago Bay, Mexico

Cabeza Negra was a really rolly anchorage. We knew that since we'd stayed there before, but last night was horrific! Cory even made mention "we should have just put our anchor down in the ocean and it would've been better than Cabeza Negra." I was completely exhaused, so it didn't matter how much we were moving around, I was out like a light.

We had a nice day trip back up the coast. However, about 5 miles out from Manzanillo we ran into an area with a bunch of fishing lines. The lines were strung out in 25-100 feet segments with small bottles on each end as floats. They were really hard to spot, and we snagged one. Thank goodness we saw the float and were able to idle our engine. In the light wind, we were motor sailing and if we hadn't put our engine in idle, the line would've gotten stuck in the prop. We were able to tack back and forth and wiggle the line off our keel. It's bad news if you get a line stuck in your prop, and it's not good to run the engine with the wrapped line. Also, it's not good for the fishermen either. They lose their line! Since we saw the panga fishing boat, we headed toward them. They had a ton of lines out, and we didn't want to catch another one. As soon as we got in yelling distance, I called out "donde esta el fin?" or "where is the end?" They happily pointed us in the right direction. While we were asking for directions around their lines, we were able to see the panga fishermen pull a huge Durado out of the water. Wow, it was a pretty fish...very green!

We are now anchored in Santiago Bay. This is a great spot, and there are about 20 boats here. We'll be here for a little bit and then head into Barra. As we'd predicted, there's a huge storm coming down Baja. The swells will make it our way by Wednesday. Barra lagoon will be more protected so we're hoping it will be our next stop.

The pictures within the blog and the gallery has been updated. Also, I have added a new album "Mexico 2" since our first one is full.
