Mine Fields
25 May 2008 | 9:00pm, anchored at Puerto Santo Tomas

We slept like rocks last night in San Quintin. The anchorage was great - hardly a roll to the boat at all. Well, maybe we were really tired. Honestly, I don't think if there was a roll, I'd even noticed!
This morning we left San Quintin at about 5:45am. The anchorage was really shallow, and on our way out we were surprised to see a gray whale pop up right beside us. That was the beginning of our day full of mine fields!
We had a rather long day today because we pushed really hard to get to Puerto Santo Tomas. We could've had an easy day if we'd stopped at Colonet anchorage 50 miles sooner, but it wasn't even noon when we reached that anchorage. So, we decided to push on. All afternoon we saw whales - left and right! They would spout both close and far away from us. It was like little explosions all over! Many times, we'd see multiple spouts in one place as it was a group of whales traveling together. Often, the whales would come fairly close to us (or us to them). One time we had to slow our boat down to an idle because the whales decided to cross right in front of us. It was really an awesome experience to have them come up right next to us and spout and show their bodies and tails. We were amazed at how many whales we saw today. It was a mine field out on the ocean! We are guessing we saw 30-40 whales just this afternoon.
So, that wasn't the end of our mine field experience today. The anchorage we're in has quite a bit of kelp. We had to wedge our boat in the anchorage between the kelp paddies and the moored pangas. Despite the kelp, the anchorage is quite cute. There are some homes on the hills in addition to a very Spanish looking bell tower.
Tomorrow we'll be making our way into Marina Coral in Ensenada. It's only about 15-20 miles from here, so we'll be there in no time.
