08/21/2010, Through the Straits of Gibralter
We left Gibralter today at 9.30 this morning with no wind, It was forecast for a Force 5 - 6 in the Straits and we got what was promised and a bucket load more! The strongest gust was 46 knots, the average wind speed 40 knots, The wind was from behind and we were averaging 7 - 8 knots with a tiny piece of headsail out.. I think that is the strongest winds we have ever experienced together on Coba Libre she did us proud.. The passage was only 6 hours, we are now on the Atlantic Coast and out of the Med !
We are in a little place called Barbate but only stopping for 1 night as the marina is quite expensive at 33 euros so off to an anchorage tommorow in Cadiz !

There are lots of Barbary Apes on the Rock, they were quite playful, but I was a bit scared of them.. You aren't suppose to feed them or you get fined £500.00. We were told that they were quite vicious and people get bitten everyday.. The steel peoples hats and if you don't be careful nick handbags as well !! We were going to walk back down but it was quite a way (2 hours) and it was in the middle of the day just toooo hot plus we have lots to do today as we are leaving in few days for Tarifa ..
We have also managed to sort out our Satellite Phone as well so if anybody would like to make a really expensive phone call to us the number is 8816 316 69100 , We got quite a reasonable contact we paid £335.00 for a 6 month contract, I think it costs something stupid like 1 pound plus per minute .. It will only be used in desperation or to call everybody to let them know we are sinking !!

We have been in Gibralter now for 5 days, Tim left us on Sunday after his week passage with us, Hope you got home safely and had a nice holiday with us..
We were staying in Ocean Village Marina but we only ended up there for one night because we were on the expensive quay and couldn't get into the cheaper side of the marina, you have to pay £25.00 a night on the expensive side just because you can receive Satellite TV (but that is only if you have a sky box ?) So we decided to give Queensway Quay Marina a call and go there at only £18 a night what a bargain it is a nice marina with all the facilities you need - www.queenswayquay.com
Whilst leaving we met a lovely English Couple Terry and Emma on Yacht Libertine an Oyster 39, they left the UK at nearly the same time as us, have sailed to most of the places we have been and we have only just bumped into them. We had a lovely meal on there boat last night, Terry cooked a Lasagne and thanks Emma for being such a great Host.. They are sailing to Madeira as well then Canaries onto the Caribbean so I am sure we will be bumping into them along the way..
James and Terry were busting out tunes on their Guitars for most of the evening which was great entertainment here is a great picture of them in complete concentration !!

Gibralter is a great place to stock up on those English Goodies that you cant get in a Spanish Supermarket, I have been in Morrison's the last two day's, Ive done one ARC Shop (this is just the begining) and a James and Lesley Shop, I think we have enough Curry Paste to last until next year !! I have also stocked up Squash, Packet Sauces for when the weather is rough and enough tinned meals for about 8 days .. Its going to be very interesting trying all the different types of meals !! The guy who was serving me at the Supermarket thought I was a bit of a weirdo because of all the tinned products i bought.
Alcohol is very cheap as well, which is dangerous a 1 litre bottle of Rum (Havana club) cost me 6 euro ?? In Spain you pay that for 1 drink in a bar..
