Caity and Don in the San Juans

05/11/2011, Roche Harbor, WA

The trip in May was a great one but all too brief. Caity and I went together. Debbie and her dad, Dan, drove to Michigan so that Dan could enjoy a high school class reunion with former students, some of whom have discovered Dan on Facebook!

Caity and I arrived in Seattle and drove to Bellingham. There, we had arranged to get together with Paula Dagnon (Johnson) and her husband Brian. They brought a wonderful dinner to the boat and we headed to Pleasant Bay to enjoy it. It was great to see Paula again. She is now a professor at Western Washing State University in Bellingham. We anchored in Pleasant Bay, had dinner, and returned. Good times!

The next morning, Caity and I headed over to Sucia, where we spent the first night in Shallow Bay. We anchored and had the place to ourselves, except for two other boats. The next day we header to Prevost Harbor and tied to the dock at the state park. Caity took Rubber Ducky out for a stroll and helped another boater, who decided to anchor out, get his $10 fee to the drop box on the dock. On the third day, we headed over to the Grand Banks Rendezvous in Roche Harbor. This is the annual gather of all Grand Banks boats in the Puget Sound area. We try to make it each year. We saw several friend from the Grand Banks discussion boards Don hangs out at, including Don of Brassbounder. Caity and I had a few nice meals there, including a cooking class at the restaurant on bar-b-que. The final meal is always great with a huge spread of seafood and a roast pig.

We departed in the early morning. Brian Pemberton had told us that we could take the shortcut out of Roche on a high tide so we gave it a shot. All went well and we had plenty of water under our keel. The trip back to Bellingham was pretty uneventful. We fueled the boat up, cleaned it up a bit and then picked up our rental car and headed back to SeaTac for the departure home. It was wonderful to be able to spend time with Caity on the boat.

Heading to Bellingham
Don
05/10/2011, Over North Dakota

We are off!! I am flying to SeaTac from Orlando and Katie is coming in from Las Vegas. We meet at 1:30 at the airport, pick up our rental car, and head north to Bellingham. We hope to arrive at 4, do a quick trip to the grocery store to provision and then head to our boat in Squalicum Harbor. We hope we get to meet the team at Northwest Explorations before going down to Change of Latitude. There, we will meet a former student, Paula Johnston (now Paula Dagnon) and her husband Brian. Paula is a professor at Western Washington State University and Brian is a pilot with Alaska Airlines. The four of us plan a sunset cruise to Pleasant Bay. Paula has fixed a stellar dinner which we will enjoy after anchoring the boat. Then, we will pull anchor and head back to the marina. Should be a great day ahead!!!! More later.

I can hardly wait. In just a few days, Katie and I will be onboard Change of Latitude for a 5-day cruise in the San Juan Islands. I depart today for Orlando and my annual International Reading Association Conference. Then, I fly to Seattle on Tuesday where Katie and I will meet at SeaTac, take a rental car to Bellingham, and go for an evening cruise with a former doc student who is now at Western Washington State University, Paula Dagnon (formerly Johnston). I can hardly wait!
