Fernandina Beach to Savannah

Joanne and I spent four days in Fernandina beach. We met two great couples that enjoyed life, food and boating and had some great dinners in the Fernandina old town. Norm and Nancy started us with a great dinner at Le Clos. We subsequently enjoyed Joe’s (great indoor setting and wonderful food), LuLu’s for lunch (Excellent Salad with Chicken topping and the best fried clams), and had a wonderful Mother’s Day brunch at a old hotel built for the start of the Railroad in Florida.
Norm Weill arrived on Tuesday evening and we ventured out of the St. Mary River headed for Savannah at 1:00 PM. The schedule for the overnight trip was to be 22 hours. Great winds and a following current however cut the trip by 4 hours. We found ourselves outside the Tybee Cut at 4:00 AM. Toby was at the helm and Joanne and Norm down below rocking, rolling and trying to sleep. I eased us into the wind and opened the sails to hold as steady a motion as possible and burn off time to let the tides rise for the entry to Isle of Hope Marina in Savannah. The trip up had visits by numerous Porpoise. Norm spotted one giant turtle. We never saw more than 40 feet of water and had cell coverage most of the way north.
One rent-a-car pick up, an hour of sleep, and we were off to a dinner reservation downtown at Vic’s. Another great meal (Crab cakes and Pecan Encrusted Flounder) and we were closing in on heaven. We walked around town, enjoying the many parks built among the old homes. Very quaint. That night’s sleep was deep.
