At RYC

I'm back in the water at the Raritan Yacht Club. After a winter filled with repairing a 32 year traveler, fiber glassing a new chainplate knee , I'm ready to set sail. Well almost....
After splashing last Tuesday I found that the packing gland was allowing too much water to pass through. It was leaking bad...
Freeing up the locking nut on the packing was a problem. However after an nervous overnight soaking with WD40 the nut backed off with little problems. Thanks Tim.
The Dodger is on and the Bimini is up. Mainsail is on with its new sailcover.
After the high winds last week I lost the wheel cover. I'm going to learn to sew. That should be fun.
More Work

As you can see it is now June and Windseeker has not tasted a bit of saltwater. I cancelled May 30 because the engine would not start. After some diagnosis that almost have us taking oujt the injectors thinking it was a seized engine, we determined that the starter had to be rebuilt. Easier said than done. It had to be removed first. Two days later, one very old seized starter was in my son's hand going to the repair shop. Further investigation revealed it would be better is I got a new starter. So one was ordered.
Next - the hailing port was put on the newly painted stern. Tim did a great job with 3 coats of paint. The decals look great. OK I'll get pictures...
Now for the name decal. Since we had to wait for the starter to be finished the decision was made to paint the boat.
Tim did all the work! Monday was sanding and cleaning. Tuesday - wiped down with acetone then primer. today Wednesday - sand the primer, look for holidays. Thursday, supposed to rain. Friday morning 1st coat of topcoat. Saturday, sand and wipe down along with mast work. Sunday second coat of Top coat Monday odds and ends. Tuesday morning, name decal and SPLASH at 2pm. Are we busy or what...
The mooring will be available on Tuesday so all should be well!
Wintering Over

Its been a long time between posts so I'll bring you up to date...
November 2013 - WinSeeker was moved to Hartse Marina to have the mast refurbished. All the fittings / hardware was removed and replaced or renewed. The mast was sent out for sand blasting then powder coated with white paint was applied. Looks brand new. All holes filled and sanded over. New running rigging was purchased and installed. Winches replaced on the mast. The furlings for the cutter and jib rigs were scrapped and replaced with a new Harkin furling rig for the jib. The cutter sail and rigging are not going to be used this year. I would like to get a asynmetrical this year but we'll have to watch the expenses.
Once the basics were installed and the mast put back together My son and I motor sailed the boat back to NJ. A trip worthy of another blog.
Fast forward to the present March....
The jib was sent out for a suncover by Egars. That should be back soon. The dodger needs new glass. That is being installed presently. The bimini needs a little stitching repair and is being finished up with the dodger.
My two cabin winches are undergoing a thorough cleaning and lube in my basement. They are almost read to be reinstalled.
Last week, a garboard was installed in the bildge.
The latest is that The new anemometer cups that were installed in November are now missing having either froze and broke or the shaft came loose. I'm going to have to climb the mast to check.
Now May 27 - in Morgan Marina.
Te bottom has been painted . Blisters were discovered during the sanding. I epoxied the worst ones and left the rest for next year. I'm planning to have the bottom stripped and then take care of he rest of the blisters.
Tim painted the stern with Brightside topcoat. He learned how to roll and tip. After the thirs coat it looked like a new boat. Now for the new names.
I'm also planning to awlgrip the top for next years' projects. I still have to go up the mast and replace the cups, have not done that yet. It is getting close to the 30th wen the boat is expected to splash. The sails have to be but on and the engine brought out of hibernation. Alot to be done before Friday.
Ed Allen you will be proud of her.
A New Dawn

A new boat is coming! 1984 Hunter 37 Cutter rig. Name: Windseeker. Right now the boat is in Maryland. A bit of work is being done...New roller furling, running rigging. Fore and back stays, Mast and fittings refurbished. Also needs a holding tank. Once the work is completed I'll bring her up to NJ.
A new Garmin wind sensor has been purchased for the top of the mast.
YOMS is gone
19 December 2012 | Perth Amboy
YOMS is gone! Sandy did her in. The boat was on stands at RYC for the winter. During the storm YOMS along with 30 other boats including 2 of the club's launches and the committee boat were destroyed or badly damaged. YOMS was totaled and left for salvage. I was able to recover some personal items but not the log book that I so wanted. The inside was filled with water and made it impossible to move around. Quite a bit of work was completed and I was looking forward to next spring (2013) to complete the rest of the planned jobs.
If you look back at the last pictures taken while on board they seem to sum up the great experiences that were had.
I won't forget.

A long Day

Saturday
The distance to NYC over yhe bay s about 15 miles - a nice 2 hour trip with the right wind. We had a nice day but it wasn't a 3 hour ride . Starting out had good expitations because the wind was mediun ~10 knots out of the east. Leaving the moring was the best , the wind slowly diminished after that. By the time we reached Old Orchard lighthouse the wind had dropped off to 5-10. The closer to NYC the slower we went. With the current against us we were barely moving (something to keep in mind for the future). I started the engine and we motored the rest of the day. Coming under the
verizano bridge was impressive to say the least. The skyline ws beautiful and Peggy took a lot of pictures.
