Still haven't gotten enough of Croatia from your last sailing trip? Me neither. My name is Gilbert Seric and welcome to my blog. Today I will be sharing a special sailing story about the very long island whose name in Croatian is literally translated "Dugi Otok". The name is appropriate because of its distinctive shape.

Dugi Otok can be found off the Dalmatian coast, west of Zadar. When you gaze upon it while on the sea, the first thing you notice is how the towns and villages are all huddled together because one side of the islands is tall and rugged, uninhabitable by anyone.

The island has always been a smart destination for yachtsmen and sailors who chose to visit the waters of Zadar because of its indented coastline which can accommodate many boats in its bays and coves. Also, the nature park Telascica is a wonderful sight to behold on your sailing cruise and you should seriously consider visiting it. One of the main reasons is its salt late Mir whose warm waters have therapeutic properties. If you ever decide on a hike, go for the edge of the cliffs where you will be able to enjoy a truly spectacular view. Don't miss visiting National Park Kornati too! They're located in the close nearness of Dugi Otok.

If you want to experience something new and fun, visit the Sali fiesta and enjoy a very popular donkey race in Sali, biggest settlement on the island with a small port for boats and yachts. Not everyone can say they participated in a donkey race, and believe me when I say, it is loads of fun.
If you're a fan of diving as much as me, be sure to visit Bozava, a charming part of the coast with a beautiful pine forest. It is a famous diving center with other various sports activities. The most beautiful diving site of Dugi Otok where I've been was the underwater cave Brbinjscica. The underwater life there is just amazing and breathtaking. Be sure to bring and underwater camera to document everything. A once in a life time experience!

Another popular sailing destination when visiting Dugi Otok is probably the village Veli Rat. There you can find a 19th century lighthouse which offers a spectacular view of the whole island. Also, make sure not to miss out on one of the most beautiful beaches on the island - Sakarun. It is located in the quiet, secluded gulf providing a natural shelter for boats and yachts. I was really lucky to have stumbled on that place while cruising around the island. It is a great place to relax and spend the whole day swimming and enjoying the sun and sea.

Dugi Otok is perfect for those who like to spend their summer holidays in hunt of beautiful and unusual spots, away from the crowded towns. If you want to enjoy pure natural beauty and really relax, Dugi Otok is the right place for you. If you're considering Croatia for your next sailing vacation, click here.
