Painting the Davits
31 December 1969 | Langebaan
Bad luck with the weather today. After being very patient and cautious and waiting the entire morning for the fog to clear up we (me & the two paint experts) went to the boat for the second coat of paint on the davits. All looked good at the start: sun shining, wind hiding, and no fog anywhere to be seen . Perfect for the task ahead - at least that's what I thought, and at least for a little while. Then the skies turned grey again and just before I was about to start with the last beam on the davits it started dripping - which I chose to ignore since it was very little, almost non-existent and I really wanted to get this second coat on. But as the droplets turned into a rather persistent drizzle and I also couldn't ignore the vast grey sky any longer, I reluctantly had to give up just before the finish line. How frustrating! But well, tomorrow is another (hopefully drier) day.
In the meantime my two paint specialists also where in a rather indifferent mindset towards their job today. They decided it was more crucial to brush up on their survival skills and focused on hunting (fishing) and gathering (collecting seaweed and other tiny sea creatures). So I was left on my own (inexperienced) devise to stay motivated and get the painting done.
But hey, who am I to blame them: If we happen to get into trouble on the vast stretches of water out there what use will be my perfectly painted davits compared to their immaculate fishing & (seaweed) gathering skills. So, fair enough! I guess it's just once again once of those typical "woman things" - you just can't get the urge to do cosmetics out of them, no matter if they're on land or on the water.
