Off the charts
01 October 2017 | Essex CT
Not really, of course. My electronic charts go all the way from Maine to the Bahamas, as do my paper charts (with some gaps). But I have now gone further than I ever have before, and am in 'uncharted territory'. The rest of this trip will go further into this new territory - which is what I always intended.
I am now anchored off Essex CT in the Connecticut River. This morning I will dinghy over to the town for breakfast and a little exploring. A man at the marina where I picked up fuel, suggested I come here, and said it was voted one of the prettiest towns in America.
I left Wing's Cove two days ago at 7:30am, and had a very nice run down Buzzard's Bay, past New Bedford and Newport to Pt Judith. Sunny day, light wind and I motorsailed the whole way. I anchored in Pt Judith Pond - a peaceful spot except for a couple of jet skis, and where the URI Sailing Team was having practice races. Yesterday, the weather started OK and went downhill, with rain and periodic storms where the wind would go from 8 kts to 25 kts. And more of those damn 'following seas' everyone wished on me!
The inside of the boat is a mess! Clothes everywhere - there just isn't a spot to store everything. Fuel consumption is one concern - I'm using more per hour than I'd planned, which means more frequent fuel stops.
Today I will head out after breakfast for Bridgeport CT for the night, and then on Monday to City Island NYC, where I will stay in a marina, get some provisions, and do laundry.
