The Morgan 382 is a sturdy fiberglass cruising yacht designed by Ted Brewer. The Morgan 38 was first designed by Charlie Morgan in 1969 as a classically styled sailing vessel built by his company, Morgan Yacht Company, in St. Petersburg, Florida. These were based on his earlier successful 34-foot yachts.
Those early M38 sloops and yawls were replaced by a more contemporary series of 38 footers in 1977, the Morgan 382 designed by Brewer and the Morgan design team. Southern Cross is an M382 (hull number 232), built during this middle period. The most obvious design change was the elimination of the centerboard and addition of a cruising fin keel with skeg-mounted rudder. It also added a foot to the beam width and another 1,000 pounds displacement.
