St. George's Castle

Next stop was St. George's Castle. In 1504, building of the main structure was started, although it had been the first capital of Cephalonia since 1500 and for the next two and half centuries was the centre of life. The building was conducted under the supervision of Venetian craftsmen and designed into 3 parts; the exterior walls, the interior courtyard in the shape of a horseshoe and the central rocky rise. Inside lived 12,000 people including the leading families of the time. It seemed like an enclosed village with services to support the population. The views of the Cephalonian countryside from the top were breathtaking and we had lunch just outside the castle taking it all in
