On top of Australia
05 July 2008 | Thursday Island - Torres Straits
A couple of days ago we made it to this isolated northernmost spot of Australia. Except for a busy border patrol, customs offices and immigration there is not much here. It is very isolated. An airport on neighboring Horne Island connects to Cairns and goods are brought in by small freighters. Food and everything else here is therefore very expensive. (A jar of the kids' favorite Nutella costs 5.70 in Bundaberg, here it is
15.70!!! And that is true even for basics. This of course is bad for the local Torres Islanders. At least they can fish (if they find them). We have not caught anything since Magnetic Island!
We are waiting for a new electric cord for my computer, which should get here by tomorrow, Monday. On Tuesday we shall check out with customs and be on our way to Kupang on Wednesday. If we get the cord, I shall update this blog on the way, if not, you might not hear from us for at least a couple of weeks
