Nuuk – Destiny Arrives in Nuuk
27 August 2017 | Nuuk, West Greenland
Janice : clear day, sunshine
We have eventually arrived in Nuuk. It is a lovely clear day, sunshine. Being Sunday, the locals are all out in their various boats enjoying the good weather, fishing or hunting. The harbour is busy, crowded so we were rafted up against 5 other boats and later an American yacht was added on the outside of us. We spent the afternoon walking around town, getting an initial impression and finding the supermarket etc. The people are all very friendly; lots of waves when passing on the water and smiles while walking around town. Nuuk seems to be drawing in all the life from the coast, village after village are now deserted due to the hard living conditions (No power, unreliable food resources dangerous seas, no education etc). Living conditions in Nuuk do not seem that great, there are clearly more residents than jobs. That said everyone seems to have a small dory with 150hp outboards. Sunday evening saw them all return with fish, seals or reindeer. There is happily for us a good level of English spoken which is making our life easier than expected. Just for now we are getting used to people (Greenland has 56,000 people of which 16,500 live here in Nuuk), cars (there are only roads in towns, there are no inter-connecting roads at all) and a good selection of fresh food (nearly all vegetables are flown-in, some lamb is home grown but otherwise all staples come by ship on the Royal Danish Line).
