First Real Blow Since Arriving in Sisimiut

04 October 2017 | Sisimiut - photo shows it in good weather
Janice : SW gale, some swell, icy rain/sleet later in the day
We have been waiting for this weather to check out the anchorage in strong wind from the South West (our most open aspect). The GRIB file shows 40+ kts just off the coastline. However, only 20 nm inside this area we have had 20 kts of wind, gusting to 31 with some swell but generally very good. Certainly a lot calmer than the anchorages we had in Iceland. With Spring tides on their way, the only concern was a small shallow area. In a SW blow with full Springs we would have to bring the keel up to avoid touching a rock at low water. Unfortunately due to the steep to nature of the beach, we can not simply move the anchor 20m further out as the water deepens considerably. So this means we have uncomfortably close, rocky lee shore immediately on our stern in a south or south westerly wind. Our only consolation is that the anchor would have to drag up a steep muddy slope which is reassuring. Otherwise we have to move to a different anchorage in strong southerlies.

Calm weather has returned for the next week, so we are going to head out to the surrounding fjords to explore and hike.
