The Blue Hole

04 August 2010 | Surundu Bay
A delightful side trip
John was so stoked with the free, halfway-decent WiFi that he was up at 0600 sending e-mails, gathering weather information from dozens (or so it seemed) of sources, Skyping the family and just USING it!
After breakfast we loaded up our snorkelling gear and tranferred to Wombat to motor around to the Blue Hole in Peterson Bay, behind Oyster Island. A long pleasant dinghy ride from the anchorage took us from salt to fresh water. The fresh gradually started to turn green-blue, then turquoise then an iridescent blue but, totally clear. The Hole itself is about 40 metres across, and maybe 20 deep. It is surrounded by bright green trees and low shrubby vegetation, and was bathed in sunlight when we were there. It was an absolutely unique experience - we have not seen anything remotely like it, and we were almost speechless. We took some photos, which are in the photo gsllery, but the colour just doesn't translate; however the pics may convey some idea of the magnificence of it.
Back to Wombat after a long swim, some snorkelling and free diving trying vainly to reach bottom in the centre of the hole. A picnic lunch on board, then back to Surundu Bay, from where we are sending this post via the aforementioned WiFi. We thought at first that the reception was accidental, but we note that the owner has an interest in yachting, owns a catamaran in the bay, and that there is a WiFi antenna on the roof of one of the buildings in his complex, which is directed right at the anchorage. So there! His boats are called Sir Lancelot and Lady of Shallot - so chivalry is not dead!
