The Anchor Windlass

The 12 Volt electric anchor winch (windlass) is a true American product and is manufactured in East Greenwich, Rode Island, by the Ideal Windlass company in all stainless steel and chromed bronze material. (http://www.idealwindlass.com/) Our model is the H2F 12V - non reversing. This is our second windlass from the same manufacturer. Our previous bluewater boat "Najade", a Ted Brewer designed 37 ft sailboat sprouted almost the same model in painted steel. As you can see on one of the pictures, this windlass is looking pretty good, almost like new, after 5 years of heavy use, incl. Patagonia and Cape Horn area. This superb windlass gave us not even one little problem. It is easy to operate by stepping on a foot switch from the same manufacturer. It has on the portside a rope capstan and on the starboard a chain wildcat for 3/8 G4 chain. We choose the non reversing model for the reason that, when paying out chain, we can control the speed by using the hand wheel brake and thus matching the current or wind conditions. The manufacturer recommends using EP 90 gear oil for the gear case. Diesel Duck had better luck in using EP 140 gear oil. This windlass is a hell of a good product and works wonderfully for our 16 ton Diesel Duck. Don't let yourself be fooled by the shiny product, this windlass is a rugged performer and no toy. The company had manufactured many windlasses for the US Navy.
