Albufeira to Culatra Log
You just can't beat the smell of diesel fumes mixed with the cool, fresh, morning air... especially at 7.00am!
We decided to leave Albufeira at low water and utilise the full six hours tide to arrive at Culatra more or less at high water. Leaving this early meant that we had no wind so we just motored along slowly whilst enjoying the day, which by the way was overcast!
Just like last year, as we approached the entrance we gained an additional 3-4 knots making our speed an impressive 9.9 knots. Not quite as fast as last year but still we encountered back eddies and swirling water that made Flirtie slew around a bit. Once again Bruce steered us through the worst of it as we followed the buoyed channel into much calmer water.
We chose the North side of the island to anchor. It was busy but the anchorage is huge, allowing us to choose a spot with plenty of swinging room and a decent amount of water under the keel. Our new Rocna anchor dug into the seabed extremely well, so well in fact that we're worried if our windlass will lift it when we depart!
Total distance this season: 97.83 nautical miles
