There's a LIDL in Cetraro! Bruce already knew this when he joked on route that he could see something in the far distance, something yellow and blue and with four little letters... L...I...D...L. The captain aboard good ship Flirtie has finally gone crazy - someone please help me! There's no need to mention what we will be doing whilst ashore.
Our route took us across the Golf of Policastro, a wide sweeping bay. Light airs were coming off the land but enough to actually motor sail with the main unfurled. This gave us a little more speed and sent a gentle breeze into the cockpit and cabin below. With all the motoring that we've been doing the heat from the engine bay has been intense. Today was no exception so we decided to provide a bit more ventilation by lifting a small section of the cabin floor. It certainly made the temperature in the cabin far more bearable by late evening.
We planned to anchor just off the beach outside of the marina but when we arrived we noticed a sand bar encroaching the harbour entrance and main fairway. Anchoring off the beach was dismissed as we would have been too close. The harbour wall inside the entrance was also dismissed when we saw a trawler pass by, its wash heading straight towards the concrete jetty that is cut away beneath the quay. It was plain to see how easy it would be for damage to occur - a sudden roll and a fender could get wedged beneath the ledge or worse still the gunwale. No wonder the quay was empty! Reluctantly we radioed on VHF to be allocated a berth.
With the main town a few miles away we were more than content to meander around the surrounding area where life definitely runs at a slower pace. The whole area is non-touristy with locals just going about their daily life which made for a pleasant change.
At €60 a night it wasn't cheap but it included rubbish disposal, wifi, water, electric, spotlessly clean facilities and free use of a washing machine which also ran at a slower pace taking an astonishing 4.5 hours to complete a cycle! Fuel was available on the quayside and good old LIDL was just 20 minutes walk away. It's all here (LIDL, good facilities, peace and quiet) despite what some online comments say.
