The adventures of Yacht Flirtie

"Hi, we are sailing yacht Flirtie's crew, Bruce and Caroline. Welcome to our blog.

Tapas-ed out in Aviles

Aviles certainly lived up to and exceeded all our expectations. Behind what is the commercial frontage is a beautiful town offering much to all. We walked the paved and cobbled streets for a couple of hours admiring all the properties, coffee and sideria lined plaza's as well as all the tapas bars and gardens.

Today we were determined to enjoy our first tapas in glorious sunshine in one of the many tapas bars so armed with our two Spanish phrase books we had the painstaking task of translating the menu. After half an hour we were pretty confident that we wanted to try out three dishes: potatoes coated in olive oil and garlic, salami style sausages and calamari together with some bread all to be washed down with a glass of wine and a beer.

We both looked at one another in disbelief when the dishes arrived - they were much larger than we'd anticipated. Still, not wanting to see any waste we ate every last morsel all for the princely sum of €14 including the drinks :-)

Having returned back to the boat with very full stomach's an afternoon siesta followed...ZZZzzz.

I think it's fair to say that the pilot books don't do this town any justice and it was only after reading Michael E Briant book "Gentle Sailing Route to the Mediterranean" that we decided to stop here and we're very glad we did.
