The adventures of Yacht Flirtie

"Hi, we are sailing yacht Flirtie's crew, Bruce and Caroline. Welcome to our blog.

La Coruna

Whilst waiting for the wind to abate, we've taken the opportunity to really explore Coruna.

We also gave Flirtie a bit of TLC and polished one side of her hull along with cleaning the fenders (we didn't want to overdo it by polishing the other side!)

We couldn't help but notice the different nationalities here: French, English, Irish, German, American, New Zealand, Australian... all heading in different directions of the world. Along with the cruise liner visits to the town - it is permanently busy with tourist.

It's amazing what you notice when you have time on your side... at low water Bruce spotted star fish and sea urchins living on the marina pilings.

We visited the old town during the day and enjoyed the evening ambiance as the town came to life from 10pm and continued into the early hours of the morning.

Our walk along the peninsula towards 'Torre de Hurcules' was very pleasant with excellent views. The lighthouse is reported to be the worlds only still functioning Roman lighthouse.

We also spent several hours visiting the local 'ferreteria' and 'pombo' (Chandlery) to source additional lures, weights and line for catching tuna. Yep, it's that time when we've been thinking about fishing but given that we appear to be motoring and sailing over 6 knots mackerel are out and tuna are in as we go down the Portuguese coast!!

Surprisingly most of the shops are laid out like 'Arkwright’s stall' (Open All Hours, an old British sitcom) so it's necessary walk up to the counter and ask for whatever you’re after. This presents a bit of a challenge when you can't speak the lingo however thanks to Google translate, digital photos and mobile phones we were able to source exactly what we required.

So now we've made up a 'trolling' kit to potentially catch tuna... I'm requesting small tuna only as we wouldn't know what to do with ourselves if we caught a whopper... gulp... watch this space!
