Day 55 - Thu 21 May 2015
Docked - Georgetown, MD
[photo: a two-ship formation of Blue Angels in slow flight. they are not climbing, but using engine thrust to maintain this very tricky angle of attack. Having one plane do it is difficult, but having 2 stay so close while doing it is amazing.]
We certainly slept well last night but it surely did get cold again quickly. We were both up before 0600 and I got the heater on for an hour while we got breakfast and readied for travel. The wind was out of the NE and not terribly strong, so we took off and stayed close to the eastern shore to minimize the wave size. For the most part, that worked very well. Our destination was changed from Rock Hall to Georgetown, mainly because of the forecast for tomorrow that indicated wherever we wound up today would be our 'home' for 2 days.
The bonus was that we had a fair current almost all the way, sometimes as much as 1.2 kts, which really helped speed us along. Instead of the 6 hours I had allowed, it only took 4.5 hours from dock to dock. Along the way, we saw a surprising number of boats in the Bay. One reason may be that this area narrows down considerably, so all traffic is funneled into one small area. We did not have to get too close to any large shipping, however, despite crossing the shipping channel several times.
We are staying at the Georgetown Yacht Basin and from all reviews and our personal experience so far, is a pretty nice place and very reasonable in cost. For $1.25 per foot 'in season' you also get free electricity. We are very close to the laundry and showers, which are quite nice with lots of hot water. I decided to get fuel here rather than at Delaware City, where it may or may not be more expensive and it would just be one less thing to worry about.
With the rain lasting until after supper, we didn't venture out except to take a nice hot shower. As Diane complained, however, she was freezing before getting back to the boat. After hours of reading and some napping, we heated the crockpot turkey and gravy, heated the pre-cooked mashed potatoes, and cooked up some carrots for a fine feast.
When the rain stopped and the little light filtering through the overcast was fading, Clyde went onto the dock with me for a long walk. He seemed to be energetic about it until he heard and saw some activity at the shore end, so he turned around. I was hoping to get him all the way to the opposite end where the bathrooms were so I could go, but he turned around just shy of there and almost ran back to the boat where Diane was chatting with some nearby dock neighbors. They had sold their sailboat recently and completed the Great Loop last year.
The forecast is for it to be much warmer tomorrow and sunny. Hopefully, we will get our bikes out and explore this place a lot more.
