Chasing That Horizon!

The Voyages and Journeys of Keith and D'Anne as they traverse the highways and waterways of America, the Pacific and Atlantic Coasts, the deserts, mountains, and the heartland, via boat, RV, plane, train, or cycle.

About:
We have been boating for a little over 40 years. Our boats progressed from a 10 ft sailing dinghy to a Venture 17, American 25, Newport 30 MKIII, to a CT-41 Ketch - all sailboats. Searching for a little more speed and adrenaline,, we bought our first power boat, a 17ft runabout. [...]
Extra:
Our Backyard, a Carver 3607 trawler in Virginia, has been sold to a new adventurer. Dragon's Breath, our CHB-41 in Northern California, has also been sold to someone with wonderful dreams. Our Backyard carried us down the eastern rivers of America, on a voyage of incredible discovery. Alas, she [...]

Technology

Technology. It is the Force by which we base our lives. Our clocks are set by a radio signal coming from a master clock somewhere in Colorado, as it measures the half-life degradation of a tiny speck of uranium. Our cell phones receive a time signal from the internet, as well as the current and predicted [...]

Flat Earth

I received an awful lot of flak from fellow RV group members, when I posted a photo of our rig with the rear leveling jacks fully extended, our rear wheels two inches off the ground, as we sought to compensate for a very uneven slope that served as our last parking spot. You see, the parking brakes are [...]

My Kind of Morning

I barely know the difference between a crow and a chickadee, yet am enthralled by the morning calls of these creatures. It's early, and the sun is just peeking through the trees and fog, about to stake its claim on our little part of the world. After some periods of hard rain yesterday, it looks like [...]

Another Winter's Journey Has Begun

The sweet salty flavor of ranch dip, clinging precariously upon the end of a celery stick reminded one of adolescence. It was a reminder of days gone bye, a staple of parties and get-togethers, the ever-present accompaniment to chips, crackers, cubes of cheese, wine, and the noise of celebration. It [...]

A Break in the Weather

A mighty "Yeowww" followed by a flowing stream of epithets has shaken me out of my dreamy tedium as I am scraping hardened barnacles from the propeller. Looking up, I see my boatyard neighbor walking in circles rubbing his forehead, his dust mask and earmuffs hanging at an odd angle, and his ball cap [...]

Out of the South

Cloudy 65
Having completed replacement of the hydraulic lines, repaired an air line, and replaced a hydraulic jack, we were ready to move on. But first, we took a drive in the Mini, first to the movies to see "Sully", and then to Costco. This isn't a metropolitan area, so driving to the movies took close to an hour, Costco, another hour. Driving back to White Stone, VA, we took an impromptu detour along Colonial Highway to see Williamsburg and Jamestown. We decided to enjoy them from the seats of the convertible, as we had already had a long day, and it was late. The drive was beautiful, but long.

We started our northbound journey by first going south to The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, deciding to see the Virginia Eastern Shore. Camping in Cape Charles, we walked the beach, saw the concrete WW2 merchant ships, now used as a breakwater, visited the Barrier Islands Museum and Almshouse, and lunched at an original Silk City diner. Continuing north, we detoured through Ocean City, MD, and drove up the Delaware Shore. There were thousands of motorcycles in the area for some kind of weekend meet. Doing our best to avoid major metro areas, we camped near Elkton, MD, at the top of the Chesapeake Bay. Near Allentown, PA, the motorhome started losing power, and there were additional air leaks, causing reduced functionality of some systems. We were still able to progress, so we decided to limp into the Catskills toward Monticello, NY.

We camped near Bethel for two nights. One of Keith's major bucket list items (maybe the only) was checked off when we visited the site of the Woodstock Music and Arts Fair, held in 1969. The Bethel Woods Center Museum is now there, though the actual field is intact.

We had to take care of the coach issues, so we limped down the highway to the Freightliner shop, spent the entire day, and got out with what turned out to be only minor causes. The shop was good to us, and partially restored my faith in the repair business.

We wanted to at least say that we visited Connecticut, though our route did not take us that way. So we deviated from the plan and turned east at first opportunity. What a fortuitous turn that was, as it first took us over the Hudson River. Then, as we were finding our bearings, we saw a sign leading to the Old Rheinbeck Aerodrome. Keith had read about this in Popular Science Magazine, back in 1968. Having not given it much further thought, it is an amazing testament to the power of the human mind and memory retention. He remembered the name of the founder, Cole Palen, and the Flying Circus theme of the site. It was a great museum, just full of pre-WW1 aircraft, vehicles, and an incredible array of unrestored, unpreserved, aircraft parts. This was truly a treasure trove of antique aviation memorabilia.

We did get into the northwest corner of Connecticut, driving through several towns that just looked "Connecticut", before we entered the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts. We stopped for some groceries in Great Barrington. Now, perhaps we were tired from a long day, and perception may be misleading, but we felt a "coldness" from the people that we spoke to. No one knew us or where we were from, but the perception was there.

We finally stopped at a campground in Adams, MA, where we will stay long enough to nurse an aching back, and just do nothing for a day or two.
