About:
We have been boating for a little over 40 years. Our boats progressed from a 10 ft sailing dinghy to a Venture 17, American 25, Newport 30 MKIII, to a CT-41 Ketch - all sailboats. Searching for a little more speed and adrenaline,, we bought our first power boat, a 17ft runabout. [...]
Extra:
Our Backyard, a Carver 3607 trawler in Virginia, has been sold to a new adventurer. Dragon's Breath, our CHB-41 in Northern California, has also been sold to someone with wonderful dreams. Our Backyard carried us down the eastern rivers of America, on a voyage of incredible discovery. Alas, she [...]

Technology

Technology. It is the Force by which we base our lives. Our clocks are set by a radio signal coming from a master clock somewhere in Colorado, as it measures the half-life degradation of a tiny speck of uranium. Our cell phones receive a time signal from the internet, as well as the current and predicted [...]

Flat Earth

I received an awful lot of flak from fellow RV group members, when I posted a photo of our rig with the rear leveling jacks fully extended, our rear wheels two inches off the ground, as we sought to compensate for a very uneven slope that served as our last parking spot. You see, the parking brakes are [...]

My Kind of Morning

I barely know the difference between a crow and a chickadee, yet am enthralled by the morning calls of these creatures. It's early, and the sun is just peeking through the trees and fog, about to stake its claim on our little part of the world. After some periods of hard rain yesterday, it looks like [...]

Another Winter's Journey Has Begun

The sweet salty flavor of ranch dip, clinging precariously upon the end of a celery stick reminded one of adolescence. It was a reminder of days gone bye, a staple of parties and get-togethers, the ever-present accompaniment to chips, crackers, cubes of cheese, wine, and the noise of celebration. It [...]

A Break in the Weather

A mighty "Yeowww" followed by a flowing stream of epithets has shaken me out of my dreamy tedium as I am scraping hardened barnacles from the propeller. Looking up, I see my boatyard neighbor walking in circles rubbing his forehead, his dust mask and earmuffs hanging at an odd angle, and his ball cap [...]

Loving the Desert

14 January 2017 | Joshua Tree National Park
Sunny, 72
A waxing gibbous moon illuminates the granite boulders surrounding our campsite. Joshua Trees cast their moon-shadows on the sand, mingling with the silhouettes of creosote bush and cholla as they flutter ever so gently in the night breeze. A coyote crosses just within range of our headlights, perhaps in pursuit of the desert hare that passed our way only moments before. We are just returning from an impromptu backroad trip on Black Eagle Mine Jeep trail. There is a plethora of old desert mines here. Most are played out and abandoned, yet there is still an active mining district east and north of the park.

We have been camped in Joshua Tree National Park for the past five days. Now, some may chuckle at the use of the word camping when in a 36ft diesel motor home, but this excursion requires planning and preparation. There are no services here, no water, no power. The weather has ranged from a sand and windstorm to sunny to rain, with daytime temperatures just hitting 60. With our granddaughters in tow, we climbed rock formations, had a treasure hunt, and visited an abandoned mining claim. And after returning them to their parents, we continued to hike, climb, and drive Jeep trails. Two more trails await us tomorrow, as we continue to explore JTNP. Pinkham Canyon Jeep trail was difficult to find, but it had some beautiful sights, sandy trails, but only a few challenging spots.

Keith has been coming here since 1978, when he was in the Navy, before this was a National Park, and there are always new sights to see.

Today we are visiting the Salton Sea, which is much larger and prettier than we expected. We will try to drive all the way around today, which should pretty well wipe us out.

We've been camped in JTNP for over ten days now. The rain came down steadily yesterday, and it got cold. But it is still beautiful, and we will stay two more days. Then, we are headed back to Menifee to visit our daughter again, park the motor home, and drive the Jeep to Las Vegas for a week, while the motor home gets some maintenance items done. After that...who knows? There is still a little more doctoring, dentisting, and visiting to do in the Bay Area, so we may just hunker down there for a while before casting our eyes east again.
