4 Wheelin in Daytona

15 November 2006 | Vero Beach, FL
Dave
Yesterday, we arrived in the town of Vero Beach, Florida. It is 50 miles north of West Palm. Cruisers who have been here before refer to this as Velcro beach, once you arrive it is hard to leave. We will have to see for ourselves. We stumbled upon a neat and inexpensive marina in Daytona and spent three beautiful days. We were looking for a good location to celebrate DJ's 13th birthday and to slow down a bit. The beach was a short walk and the kids really enjoyed boogie boarding in the 70 degree water. It was pretty neat to see cars driving on the beach. For DJ's birthday, we rented a couple of 4 wheelers and had a ball ripping up the beach. (OK maybe we didn't rip, but I know our friends Trent and John would have been proud). We worked them so hard that the tranny on my machine was stuck in low and we still had three miles to go. Lisa and DJ went ahead while Nikki and I abandoned the machine and enjoyed a nice walk on the beach. Lisa and DJ eventually rescued us on a golf cart and we had a nice ride back. Now that we are in Florida, we are starting to think about the crossing to the Bahamas and provisioning for the next five months. We have been told numerous times that we can expect to pay triple for food in the Bahamas and the pickings will be slim. While in Daytona, Lisa provisioned a bit at Publix. We have a lot more to do, but right now the beach is calling.
