Manta to Isla de la Plata
08 September 2015
Anchors away at 6:00 am – we motor sailed 11 hours encountering the long line fishing lines five to seven miles offshore. We tangled with one and spent time cutting our way out of the polypropylene line (sorry Mr. Fisherman) – ugh! After much study we determined there was a black flag in the middle with the line running each way with various colored plastic quart oil bottles along the line – so after untangling ourselves we had to run the enter length and then turn! The last hour of a long day we were entertained by multiple whales including two that crossed our bow 50’ in front of us! As we approached the island (part of Machalilla National Park – supposed to be the poor man’s Galapagos) we were greeted by many turtles and noticed large yellow mooring buoys very close to shore. We were unsure if we were supposed to use them, so dropped the hook. Two men appeared on the beach waving their arms (???) and one finally swam out to the mooring buoy and pointed to it! We finally understood and raised the anchor, moving toward the buoy and tying up for the night. He asked if we had a permit (we did not) but it was OK just for one night.
