Oaxaca
30 October 2016
We travelled by air to the city of Oaxaca (thank you Lord for Krispy Kreme donuts and McDonalds in the Mexico City airport!!) to celebrate the Mexico holiday "Dia de los Muertos" (Day of the Dead). The ancient pre-Colombian traditions mixed with Catholicism connected to the holiday include building private alters - our hotel, CasAntica had one that honored the owner's grandmother. The alter included Aztec marigolds, photos and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed. This holiday's purpose is to invite the dead spirits to come back for a visit, with many relatives sitting by gravesides on an all night vigil.
